Description
An English grammar reference book that belonged to Lieutenant Thomas Welsh entitled "The Whole Outlines of English Grammar; a Full Definition of the Ten Parts of Speech, each part of speech systematically parsed. False Syntax Corrected. Examples &c, Rules for Writing, Punctuating, &c." The cover also lists principle business rules of arithmetic, and mensuration, tables, etc.; mechanics' works, rules, guides, etc.; geographical definitions, important dates, celebrated characters, Biblical table, forms of writings, bookkeeping, and vocal exercises, etc. The volume is a well-used pocket reference.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description
Large black leatherbound volume with boldly molded and decorated boards having tooling and gilt on both boards and spine. On spine is "Schoolcraft's History of Indian Tribes. / Illustrated by S. Eastman, U.S.A. / Part Third." Longer complete title on title page. Henry R. Schoolcraft. Published by authority of Congress by Lippincottt, Grambo & Co.
Gilt edged pages have elaborate impressed floral and scroll designs with centered American shield. Inside of covers is a large pasted-on panelof dark blue felted fabric with foliate designs. End papers have beautiful wallpaper-like, full-color designs of flowers and leaves in gold, green and red. Inscribed in pencil is "JBH Jr." on tissue page covering title page.
Appraiser notes a letter of presentation to Buchanan by Charles E. Mix, Acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs, dated Oct. 15, 1857. Not presently located (in pages?).

In ink on inside page: "A.?.S. / with H.K.Hs' love-" 2-page title pages: "Holly Leaves/ Christmas Carols and Scripture Greetings." Print is in gold. Green, red and gold holly appears on each page. First section is the Christmas story from the Bible; followed by lyrics to "Good Christian men rejoice" and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing."

Pages are edged in silver and book is tied with silver twine. 10 pages with text.
