Description
Handwritten draft or copy of a pension application for the disability of his leg wound. Written by Thomas Welsh in longhand describing in detail the leg wound he received at Buena Vista. Undated and unsigned, but evidently written in the spring of 1847. Narrative includes dates of June 9, 1846 and February 23, 1847.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Pre-printed form with the appropriate blanks filled in noting that Thomas Welsh (private) is to receive a pension of $8 per month, payable semi-annually at Cincinnati. A stylized engraving of an eagle, symbolic of the War Department, heads the page, and an official seal graces the lower left. Two page document. Signed by the Secretary of War and Commissioner of Pensions.

Resolution acknowledging Thomas Welsh's membership in the Order of United American Mechanics, Susquehanna Council
Description
Handwritten certificate of a resolution honoring Thomas Welsh for his patriotic service in Mexico, "where he has sealed with his blood his devotion to his Country." Resolution adopted unanimously at a meeting of the Susquehanna Council No. 31 of the Order of United American Mechanics. Dated September 16, 1847 and published in the Columbia Spy on September 18, 1847. Framed, in poor condition.

Title certificate for two burial lots, numbers 241 and 242 in New Cemetery (now Mount Bethel Cemetery), Columbia, Pennsylvania. Purchased at the time of his daughter Addie's death. Certificate number 92, made out to Lieutenant Thomas Welsh. Signed J. H. Mifflin. Note: John Houston Mifflin was one of the original managers of the cemetery and later served as president.
