Letter from John Fass to friend. Fass reported for duty in Lancaster in March 1865 and his unit moved to Philadelphia, Harper's Ferry, Martinsburg, Charlestown, Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, Stevenson Station, and Summit Point. He mentions that Richmond was taken. He describes the natural resources so prevalent in Virginia, which is not as developed as Lancaster County. Compares the slave quarters he has seen in Virginia to hog pens in Pennsylvania.

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to Edwin from camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia, describing camp life. As requested in a previous letter, he informs Edwin that he has not received boots or gloves and asks for a pair of gloves. He shares that he and his fellow soldiers believe the war will soon be over.

Lee stating that he is legally the president of the Virginia and Maryland Bridge Company; noting that during the war Mr. David Billmyer, a director, managed what was left of the Company and has been attempting to purchase additional shares; and suggesting that Mr. Swarr enquire of Mr. Billmyer about dividends due to Mr. Lane’s estate and asking that he inform Mr. Lee of the answer. The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
A letter from J. Ridenour, Jr. to James Buchanan. Ridenour explains how glad he was to hear Buchanan’s opinions on the war while he was visiting him at Wheatland. After leaving Wheatland, Ridenour spoke with Mr. Hamilton in Lancaster, who told him about Buchanan’s differing views on the war and the Confederacy. J. Ridenour, Jr. asks James Buchanan to confirm his notes on their conversation at Wheatland, that Buchanan did not agree with the Confederacy and would never have signed a compromise had he been President during the war, and that Mr. Hamilton was wrong. Harrisburg. With envelope and transcription. 1 October 1862.
