Description
Group of 5 envelopes painted with 4 varying designs: Japanese Embassy Gift
A & E have a long vine with clusters of purple fruits under red wash across top. On reverse, two red cartouches, one on with side at the base. Both have gray vertical script above the cartouche on the right.
B is decorated with a crane bending to drink with a vertical foliate band on the right. Two red cartouches on the reverse, one on each side at the base.
C Five cranes swooping gracefully down from the sun in the sky to waves in the water below. Two red cartouches on the reverse, one on each side at the base.
D sports three orbs, one at top. Two of varying size below, with smaller or wrapping around to the back of the envelope. One red cartouche, on the back, lower right.

Four separate handwritten envelopes; two addressed to Mr. Thomas Welsh, two addressed to Lieutenant Thomas Welsh. All four have a raised decorative border; three of these envelopes have the same border.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men.
