This is the diary of James McCullogh, a Scot-Irish immigrant farmer who settled on the Pennsylvania frontier in the mid-1700s...In its 116 pages, he jots notations from his daily life, from planting to business accounts to the secret places where he hid his tools during bloody Indian raids. The book records life-altering events such as the loss of his brother John and the kidnapping of his two small sons -the younger of which he never saw again- at the hands of Indians. A study was made of the wood in the log cabin which is said to be the birthplace of President James Buchanan. Since there is no proof that he was born in that particular cabin, the researchers wished to know if this cabin could have been his birthplace. They concluded that the " largest portion of the cabin beam samples were cut at or before 1785, six years before the birth of President Buchanan." This showed that the cabin existed at the time of his birth.
