About that time, John Fiske tells us, Lucas Vasquez d'Ayllon came from Hispaniola, and "tried the Chesapeake Bay" in search of the northwest passage, and "ob- tained a grant and began to build a town."' CRESAP'S WAR The Lancaster County Border Struggle. Cresap's War was simply a series of campaigns beginning in 1735, in a struggle which at that time was about fifty years old—the border struggle between Pennsylvania and Maryland. The difficulty began as early as 1684, and was the chief cause which

all the rich val- �leys to the east, and the tide began to pour over Susquehanna about that time. Then, that same year, came John Wright and the Barbers and Blunston and others—from old Ches- ter—and the English settlement on Susquehanna took definite form. A great wealth of history clusters about
