WRZ notes: Above is original descriptive entry of 2003. The ID for this piece is based on measurements listed here -- otherwise uncertain. Scene is a dirt road at center leading to distant village; one traveller walking. Picture is framed by foreground, having a copse of trees on either side of road. At left is a trough dispensing water into a container; sheep resting nearby.
Signed at lower left "JA. Beck / 1897". Reverse has several areas of writing that is difficult to read.
Watercolor (matted) of a rural scene. Attributed to J. Augustus Beck, brother of first wife of William Alexander Hammer, Martha ann Beck.
Bequeathed in will dated 8/20/79 to Lancaster, Pa. Historical Society.
WRZ note: Original 2003 entry above. Is this Object ID #515 - "Winter scene with trees"? If so, this scene is a meandering stream at center, with three prominent trees and a wooden fence along its banks. Distant house at center and barn to far left. (This scene is possibly Object ID #518, "Trees along the water.")
Watercolor (mounted) of rural scene attributed to J. Augustus Beck, brother of first wife of William Alexander Hammer, Martha Ann Beck. (Original entry).
Notes by wrz: The 5" x 7" size indicates this is 2003.251, a countryside scene depicting 3 cows in midfield and town, trees and mountain in distance. Picture also included in J.A.Beck entry on webside, along with "Donated by Wesley T. Hammer" and date circa 1880. This piece is framed in a modern black, stepped frame with window mat for use in 2013-2016 exhibit. It is presumed that this W/C was one of the four Beck paintings in box # 35.
