Thirteen envelopes from James Buchanan addressed to H. B. Swarr, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Two with seals. All have notes by Mr. Swarr recording the dates received and from whom; one postmarked Bedford, Pennsylvania with a 3-cent stamp; one from Theo. Costello listing interest owed James Buchanan; and one from W. J. S. Stahr listing interest owed James Buchanan.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. 11 envelopes postmarked 1852 through 1868 addressed to Miss Harriet Lane or to Mrs. Henry E. Johnston and one to Mrs. George W. Baker. Five are addressed care of Wilson McCandless, Wm. J. B. Lane, Frederick Brown, Esq., George Plitt, Esquire, or Robert Tyler, Esquire. Three from James Buchanan carry his signature and free franking, one has an intact seal; 2 others carry intact seals; 3 carry stamps; 2 are marked “paid”; 7 carry postmarks; and one has no markings.

This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.
System of Arrangement
The record group is organized chronologically, then arranged by order number within each year.
