Letter of condolence from J. E. Shomier to Major Blanton C. Welsh on the death of his sister Thomas. Letter contains sweet recollections not only of Shomier's respect for Thomas, but also his contacts with other members of the Welsh family through the years.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Draft addressed to The Honorable Joseph Reed, Esq., President of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania regarding Robert Caldwell, 1st lieutenant with Col. Atlee's regiment and promoted to captain the day of his capture at Fort Washington by the British Army. He was a prisoner of war from 1776-1779. Writer is endorsing Caldwell's rank and promotion.
