This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Note from James Buchanan for Mr. Hutter instructing him to receive the remainder of Dr. Sample’s loan and return the memorandum to him. On reverse: “Uncle James’ memorandum concerning Mr. Hutter April 18, 1848.” Lancaster.

Note from James Buchanan to James B. Lane informing him that Mr. Peters may deposit $500 or $800 to his account in the Lancaster Bank. At bottom of page: “Copy of letter to Uncle James, Lancaster Feb. 1/49 Mr. Peters deposited this day to your credit in the Lancaster Bank $800 as part payment of his Bond to you, for which I have him a receipt in your name. Your Affec’t nephew, James B. Lane.” Washington, D.C.

An oil on canvas portrait of Dr. Alexander Speer (1790-1854) by artist, Antoine Gibert. Dr. Speer was a first cousin to James Buchanan on his mother's side of the family. Dr. Speer is turned facing one-quarter turn to his right and is wearing a black suit coat and vest with a white shirt, turned down collar and a black cravat. The portrait is framed in a French reverse cove gilded frame with a raised foliate motif
Oval picture set in rectangular frame. James Buchanan is shown wearing a blue jacket with white buttons, tan vest, and white shirt and tie. Hair is brown. 3/4 front and turned to his left. Frame has scroll-work inlay, black and red. Back of frame is 'Lou

July 17, 2017: Oil on canvas portrait has vertical seam. Seated man turned slight right with brown hair, not part. Brown eyes, prominent nose and chin. Black coat. black waistcoat, black neck wear, whit shirt with down-turned collar. Sitter's right arm draped over wooden chair back. Brown background.
July 24, 2017: Painting has extensive craqelure. On lapel just below center of painting has a 1/8 inch hole. A split 1/5" from his index finger and 2 " from bottom edge.
Frame: Back has moisture staining and soil. Front has strong grime. On right side near top is a marred spot. Gesso chips at both lower corners.
