Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane stating that he opened her letter from Mrs. Kennedy and read the part dealing with John Lane’s estate; hoping that Mr. Riddle visits Lancaster when she is there; saying that a case has been argued in Harrisburg with no decision yet; expressing sorrow at the illness of James Henry’s wife; reporting that Bob Nevin visited last night and that he had his hand on General Whipple’s shoulder when he was mortally wounded and is taking the body to New Hampshire; expressing disappointment that no welcoming was planned for the 122nd Regiment; hoping the political parties may not “have a collision,” and having no further information about the Lanes except that Dick’s house is not yet finished. With envelope addressed in care of Frederick Brown, Esq., Philadelphia. Wheatland.

A letter from J. Ridenour, Jr. to James Buchanan. Ridenour explains how glad he was to hear Buchanan’s opinions on the war while he was visiting him at Wheatland. After leaving Wheatland, Ridenour spoke with Mr. Hamilton in Lancaster, who told him about Buchanan’s differing views on the war and the Confederacy. J. Ridenour, Jr. asks James Buchanan to confirm his notes on their conversation at Wheatland, that Buchanan did not agree with the Confederacy and would never have signed a compromise had he been President during the war, and that Mr. Hamilton was wrong. Harrisburg. With envelope and transcription. 1 October 1862.

Letter from John B. Lebkicher to brother from camp, in which he describes being on the front near the Tennessee River with the enemy before them. They were low on rations and artillery because the weather had been rainy and the wagons are stuck in the mud. They had already captured many prisoners and the way they were traveling in to Tullahoma could lead to more captures. Complains of marching too much.

Description
Handwritten transcription of letter from John B. Lebkicher to brother from Camp 7 Penna. Discusses the Confederate Army moving into Pennsylvania and how he thinks that Pennsylvania is unprepared. States that he has enough men to capture Lee and his army. Also, two men were hanged for beating a union worker to death. Transcription only.

Letter from Edward Lebkicher to his father from camp near Hagerstown, he traveled from Harrisburg to Shippensburg and they had not stopped marching since. The Confederate Army had a rifle fight in Hagerstown and also held up the railroad from Shippensburg to Chambersburg, hence the reason he had to walk to Hagerstown. He ends the letter stating that the cost of bread is eight cents a loaf.

Letter from Edwin M. Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from Camp near Fifth Dam regarding the lack of provisions. He had been living off of black coffee and a small amount of salted pork. However, the wagon with provisions had came in that evening. Their camp picketed and the Confederate camp picketed on the other side. Ends the letter asking his father to send stamps.

Photostatic copy of letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col. S. Stevens regarding [Caledonia]. Thaddeus received the first communication from his manager that [the Confederates] were led on Tuesday to where the teams were and took all of the horses and mules and even crippled some horses. They took 4,000 pounds of bacon, molasses, contents of the store, $1,000 worth of corn from the mills and other grain, and $4,000 worth of bar iron. On Friday, they burned the furnace, sawmill, two forges and another mill. They kept the office and store room that night and burned them on Saturday. Damage was worse than Thaddeus expected and he doesn't know what the poor families will do; he must provide for their relief. Lancaster.

Description
Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to father from camp at Minor's Hill, Virginia, thanking them for the postage stamps and money sent in a previous letter. He mentions the death of John Wenger, the first of their regiment, at Washington Hospital.

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to David McGran Lebkicher
Description
Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from camp near Fredericksburg, regarding Lt. Long leaving for home (Lancaster, PA). He mentions the return of Jacob Holabauck, who was one of three to become sick at Georgetown, and the 9th Army Corp going to Fortress Monroe. 14 February 1863.
In the a little bit below the center of the letter, there are two cuts on the first and fourth pages of the letter.
