Description
Letter of introduction from James Buchanan for Michael G. Dale, Esq. of Lancaster City. Buchanan explains that he has known Mr. Dale since he was a boy, and that his father, the Honorable Samuel Dale, is “of the highest respectability and worth.” Mr. Dale has proposed to find residence in the western states and has recently been admitted to the bar to practice law. 28 March 1838.

Henry to Louisa Anderson expressing his shock of the change in weather from the south of France to the north; relates his time with Frank in Marsailles; recalls his conversation with Mrs. Post of Baltimore in Vienna; wrote to Belle and her mother; tells of his plans in London and will sail next week from Liverpool, either on a fast ship or a slow one; discusses his health and hopes a regular routine at home will help; saw an exposition and hopes to visit Mr. and Mrs. Blake and Anne McAndrew but not Mrs. Minton because his clothes are too shabby. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Garden City, (Long Island) New York, America, damaged with postmarks but stamp missing. Paris, [France].

Henry to Louisa Anderson wondering why his mail has not reached her; Will and he went to church in Bolton and spoke to Jack Thumb; thinks Mr. Thumb is a miserable person and would like to be his share in the house there; Will is a very good child even if he spilled blueberry pie on his pants; likes the hotel, the food (except the beef), the owner, and the guests, but not the mosquitoes; mentions Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler from Staten Island; dislikes the development around the lake; questions the slow delivery of mail; inquires about the household at home; recommends a “Bermuda colored man” to Miss Bleeker; inquires about Miss Taylor; and encloses a letter from Millie to Jamie.
