Summary: This article provides several types of information about slaves in Lancaster County. These include court documents showing the sale of particular slaves, numbers of slaves in townships, and the family names of many owners. It shows the steps involved in making the sale and the purchase of a slave. It explains how the 1780 Pennsylvania state law, that required the gradual emancipation of all slaves, was put into effect. Slaves born before that date were converted to "servant" status until age 28 when they would be free.
