Summary
"While there are many collections of letters from Civil War soldiers to their wives, very few include such a rich trove of letters from the homefront. Together they paint an engrossing portrait of a soldier and husband who was trying to do his patriotic and familial duty, and of a wife trying to cope with loneliness and responsibility while longing for her husband's safe return. Beautifully edited and annotated...they bring to life a nation under siege and provide a rare look at the war's impact on both the common soldier and his family." [from the book jacket]

Summary
Voices from the Gathering Storm explains the dramatic change in thinking about the nature and value of the American Union from 1846 to1861 which impelled citizens from 11 southern states to declare independence and the remaining 22 states to fight the bloodiest war in the nation's history. This reader tells the story of seventeen Northerners and Southerners who lived through the critical fifteen years prior to the Civil War. In their letters and diaries, they describe in their own words what it was like to live during the sectional crisis and the coming of the war. [from the publisher]

Summary
An ironic examination of the founding years of our country. Historian Ellis guides us through the decisive issues of the nation's founding, and illuminates the emerging philosophies, shifting alliances, and personal and political foibles of our now iconic leaders. He explains how the idea of a strong federal government, championed by Washington, was eventually embraced by the American people, the majority of whom had to be won over. And he details the emergence of the two-party system--then a political novelty--which today stands as the founders' most enduring legacy. But Ellis is equally incisive about their failures, making clear how their inability to abolish slavery and to reach a just settlement with the Native Americans has played an equally important role in shaping our national character. Ellis strips the mythic veneer of the revolutionary generation to reveal men possessed of both brilliance and blindness.--From publisher description.

Summary
"Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in History, The Amendment That Refused to Die examines the passage of, and assault on, the "Big Fourteen," the post-Civil War amendment to the Constitution that guarantees equality and justice for all people. Howard N. Meyer explores the reaction against the amendment's sweeping reform, from judicial sabotage and KKK terrorism to the "separate but equal" debacle of Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896. He investigates the amendment's impact on more recent issues, such as institutionalized segregation and police misconduct, as well as the challenges faced by those who would extend the amendment's protective mantle to the interests of labor, women, homosexuals, and legal immigrants.".
"This updated edition analyzes the current attacks on the Fourteenth Amendment that not only threaten affirmative action, desegregation, voting rights, abortion rights, gay rights, protection from the tyranny of the State, and due process, but the amendment itself, the vital heart and guarantor of all our liberties."--BOOK JACKET.

The Scots who had moved to Ulster in Ireland suffered under economic and religious pressures, and many chose to emigrate to the American colonies in the years before the war for independence. In the colonies, they then faced economic, religious and cultural challenges as they adapted to the new land.

Settlement and adaptation in a new world / 5. Responding to a changing frontier / 6.Surveying the frontiers of an Atlantic world
Summary
"Drawing on a vast store of archival materials, The People With No Name is the first book to tell this fascinating story in its full, transatlantic context. It explores how these people -whom one visitor to their Pennsylvania enclaves referred to as 'a spurious race of mortals known by the appellation Scotch-Irish'- drew upon both Old and New World experiences to adapt to staggering religious, economic, and cultrual change...The book moves from a vivid depiction of Ulster and its Presbyterian community in and after the Glorious Revolution to a brilliant account of religion and identity in early modern Ireland. Griffin then deftly weaves together religion and economics in the origins of the transatlantic migration, and examines how this traumatic and enlivening experience shaped patterns of settlement and adaptation in colonial America. In the American side of his story, he breaks new critical ground for our understanding of colonial identity formation and the place of the frontier in a larger empire." [book cover]

Summary
"Measuring America is the fascinating, provocative, and eye-opening story of why America has ended up with its unique system of weights and measures -the American Customary System, unlike any other in the world- and how this has profoundly shaped our country and culture. In the process, Measuring America reveals the colossal power contained inside the acres and miles, ounces and pounds, that we use every day without ever realizing their significance.
