Title: James Buchanan and Wheatland Scrapbook, February 1936-May 1948

Description: James Buchanan and Wheatland Scrapbook, February 1936-May 1948. This scrapbook describes the establishment and grand opening of James Buchanan’s Wheatland in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The volume contains newspaper articles that tell Wheatland estate’s history and James Buchanan’s life story. Newspaper articles illustrate the excavation and archaeology performed at the estate before May 1948.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

Description: This collection contains genealogical data, Civil War Widow's Pension receipts, Lancaster city tax receipts of the family of John and Catharine Robinson, an affidavit of the birth of Anna Duke Krauskop, and an itinerary and program of the Liberty Bell's journey to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915.

Admin/Biographical History: John Robinson (1826-1866) married Catharine Burns on 9 March 1851. Their daughter, Susan (b. 1851), married Lewis Krauskop. John Robinson served in Co. B, First Pennsylvania Reserves, in the Civil War.

Admin/Biographical History: J. M. Mast Manufacturing Company was organized in Lititz in 1901 to manufacture animal traps, patent fishing floats and vegetable graters. In 1905 the Mast Company was merged with the Animal Trap Company of Abingdon, Illinois; the new company was said to be "the largest concern of its kind in the world." There are also articles about the United States involvement in World War II. Interesting local articles and programs discuss the World War II Memorial in West Hempfield Township. Description: Postcard of the mountains, Peacham, Vermont, from [Elsie Singmaster Lewars] to Mrs. Charles Coleman in Lancaster with a message about visiting "Stevens country". 6 September 1944.; These items are on one sheet with a note from Elsie Singmaster Lewars:; Transcription of letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col. Blanchard stating that he had to return to Pennsylvania for business and regretted that he was not able to meet with the Juvenile Society. If they raise $150 for the society's library, he will add another $50. Lancaster. J. O. Cowles, secretary. Barnet, Vermont. 17 October 1854.; Transcription of letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col.
