Riddle stating that he will sell the Shepherdstown Bridge stock in compliance with Virginia laws and will dispense the first installment of the funds to Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Kennedy, Mr. Winter and Mrs. Nicklin according to paperwork provided by Mr. Swarr; stating that he has visited the Lane lands in Bedford County and found that one tract is worthless but the others have coal and are near a railroad; quoting from a letter written by Charles B. This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

A letter from J. Ridenour, Jr. to James Buchanan. Ridenour explains how glad he was to hear Buchanan’s opinions on the war while he was visiting him at Wheatland. After leaving Wheatland, Ridenour spoke with Mr. Hamilton in Lancaster, who told him about Buchanan’s differing views on the war and the Confederacy. J. Ridenour, Jr. asks James Buchanan to confirm his notes on their conversation at Wheatland, that Buchanan did not agree with the Confederacy and would never have signed a compromise had he been President during the war, and that Mr. Hamilton was wrong. Description
An invitation to James Buchanan from a committee appointed to organize a military encampment at Ephrata (Camp Brandywine) for a ceremony to lay a cornerstone of a monument erected in memory of two-hundred soldiers of the American Revolution. The soldiers were “buried in the vicinity of the village, wounded at the Battle of Brandywine…died in the hospitals at Ephrata.” Lancaster.

Herr since someone in Baltimore has an interest in him, giving him high praise; regretting to tell her Willie “doubtless” has consumption and that since Annie cannot come, he might write Maria Weaver; reporting that he has visited the Lanes but the boys have not visited him; happily saying that Mrs. Lane hosted “a dinner of gentlemen” for Mrs. Schell he sponsored but that Mrs. Lane will not marry McEvoy; gladly saying that Miss Hetty is up and about on crutches, that Lizzie is a good cook and Mary a tolerable waiter; wishing her a happy birthday and admonishes her not to follow the examples of Mrs. R. and Mrs. U.; and saying the Nevins always ask about her.
