Description
James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 6 is arranged into three subseries of miscellaneous materials.
Subseries 1 is sheet music dedicated to James Buchanan, including the Wheatland Polka, The Schottisch, and Buchanan's Union Grand March.
Subseries 2 is published and print materials, including newspaper cartoons and illustrations, pamphlets for the 1824 election of John Quincy Adams, a tourist card, and meeting minutes.
Subseries 3 includes government documents, an act to alter and amend the several acts imposing tariffs, commercial treaties, supplementary acts, a document signed by Secretary of State William L. Marcy, a passport signed by James Buchanan, land grants, and other government documents, including some in French, Spanish, English, and German.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old. [https://www.lancasterhistory.org/about-wheatland, accessed 10/24/2019]

Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester asking her pardon for not writing earlier; Mrs. Plitt still at Wheatland; Uncle well and calm as he awaits the outcome of the election today; wishing Lily had written more as a political writer; Robert Eden’s former dark red moustache; Eskridge getting along well using a crutch and cane; the toll that the campaign took on the family; in the election “right will prevail”; Emily Schaumburg’s staying with the Porters; Colonel Pleasonton’s engagement to a widow with many children and Addy’s reaction; and suggests that Lily’s father might follow the same example to give Lily some children to play with. Description
A photocopy of a newspaper article. The small article relates to money donated by James Buchanan to the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, as well as authorities of the city of Lancaster, to be used to buy fuel for poor women of the city during the winter months. No date. Accompanied by a letter from the donor. Mr. George M. Steidler is credited with preserving the article.

Swarr decrying the inefficiency of Bowie & Williams; answering that the amount he has received through Gaw Bacon & Co. from the estate is probably $14699.20 (excepting the amount given to Dripps); requesting the previous account rendered by Gaw and Bacon; asking to be informed about Harriet Johnston’s views on Dr. Carpenter’s bill before it is paid; and noting that Gaw Bacon & Co. sold the Pa 5 percents on Saturday at 93. Swarr noting that he has received a proposal to write the biography of James Buchanan from Mr. Shunk, who would be under the influence of Judge Black and his partially false opinions about the end of Buchanan’s administration; wondering about Mrs. Johnston’s views of Mr. Reed or the book; hoping that Mrs. Johnston has received her interest on her trust funds and is satisfied with them; noting that funds for John Weaver’s school will soon be due and suggesting that these funds and those for the Lane boys be legally invested; and noting that Mr. Reed’s property on Chestnut Hill is advertised at sheriff’s sale in the Daily Age. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons.
