This is the diary of James McCullogh, a Scot-Irish immigrant farmer who settled on the Pennsylvania frontier in the mid-1700s...In its 116 pages, he jots notations from his daily life, from planting to business accounts to the secret places where he hid his tools during bloody Indian raids. The book records life-altering events such as the loss of his brother John and the kidnapping of his two small sons -the younger of which he never saw again- at the hands of Indians. He includes Bible verses and writes some entries in code, somewhat curiously, since he also provides the key. [book jacket]

Eight-year old Johann and his family arrived in Pennsylvania in 1747 on a ship named Restauration. The Thomas family, Mennonite pacifists escaping persecution in Europe, arrived just in time to experience the end of the Friends' control of the Pennsylvania legislature with pacifism as the official state policy toward Native Americans. This historical fiction traces Johann's next ten years through the unfolding French and Indian War.

"In A Town In-Between, Judith Ridner reveals the influential, turbulent past of a modest, quiet American community. Today Carlisle, Pennsylvania, nestled in the Susquehanna Valley, is far from the nation's political and financial centers. In the eighteenth century, however, Carlisle and its residents stood not only at a geographical crossroads but also at the fulcrum of early American controversies. Located between East Coast settlement and the western frontier, Carlisle quickly became a mid-Atlantic hub, serving as a migration gateway to the southern and western interiors, a commercial way station in the colonial fur trade, a military staging and supply ground during the Seven Years' War, American Revolution, and Whiskey Rebellion, and home to one of the first colleges in the United States, Dickinson. A study was made of the wood in the log cabin which is said to be the birthplace of President James Buchanan. Since there is no proof that he was born in that particular cabin, the researchers wished to know if this cabin could have been his birthplace. They concluded that the " largest portion of the cabin beam samples were cut at or before 1785, six years before the birth of President Buchanan." This showed that the cabin existed at the time of his birth.

Charles Louis Eberle was born in Dalheim,Germany, in 1766. He took up the family trade of making cutlery and surgical instruments. He emigrated to America in 1794 and continued in his trade. He first lived in Philadelphia and later moved to New York state where he took up farming. He moved again to Germantown,PA, to help his son who was farming and operating a store. A daughter lived in Lancaster County,PA.
This book, written by a news correspondent for the Marietta area, has over a thousand pages of stories and information. Abstract: This essay surveys the work of black public waiters in nineteenth-century Philadelphia and considers how they transformed menial domestic jobs into lucrative businesses. The work of public waiters in this era helped develop a catering trade for which the city became wellknown. Sources such as print culture, financial records, censuses, and directories reveal a transitional period in which public waiters negotiated a new role. From the 1820s through the antebellum era, as public waiters developed entrepreneurial catering businesses, they also helped build the black community, effect social mobility, and change eating culture.
