Buchanan, Trustees, acknowledging receipt of a check for $951 after commission and asking Swarr to correct overcharges of commissions himself rather than burden others with finding mistakes such as occurred when commissions amounting to $39 were twice charged, which could not be explained to Mr. Lightner. Swarr decrying the inefficiency of Bowie & Williams; answering that the amount he has received through Gaw Bacon & Co. from the estate is probably $14699.20 (excepting the amount given to Dripps); requesting the previous account rendered by Gaw and Bacon; asking to be informed about Harriet Johnston’s views on Dr. Carpenter’s bill before it is paid; and noting that Gaw Bacon & Co. sold the Pa 5 percents on Saturday at 93. Swarr noting that he has received a proposal to write the biography of James Buchanan from Mr. Shunk, who would be under the influence of Judge Black and his partially false opinions about the end of Buchanan’s administration; wondering about Mrs. Johnston’s views of Mr. Reed or the book; hoping that Mrs. Johnston has received her interest on her trust funds and is satisfied with them; noting that funds for John Weaver’s school will soon be due and suggesting that these funds and those for the Lane boys be legally invested; and noting that Mr. Reed’s property on Chestnut Hill is advertised at sheriff’s sale in the Daily Age. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing joy at her joining the church and asking that the engraving she proposes to have framed be given to his brother Edward since James has no appropriate place to hang it; intending to have the two boxes of champagne sent from Michael’s warehouse today; stating that Miss Hetty, complaining of “violent dyspeptic symptoms,” will expose herself about the gardens and the grounds; and reporting that he has thanked Mr. Carlisle, in her name, for the photograph. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston noting that Mrs. Ellis’ visit was agreeable and hoping that Mr. Johnston will meet her in Baltimore when she arrives, she and Becky got along agreeably; noting that the stockings don’t quite fit; comments on seeing her sister in the Reynolds carriage; passing along the gossip from Brother Edward that Ellie Bowman confided that she would marry Pat McEvoy and Buchanan agrees; and thinking that Mr. Shunk is performing his work well.
