James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 3 Papers of James Buchanan Henry, Series 1 contains the correspondence of James Buchanan Henry. Subseries 1 is letters written by James Buchanan Henry and Subseries 2 is letters received by James Buchanan Henry. The letters are primarily to and from family members and friends with family news, details of his travels, political and business matters, social engagements and responsibilities, and information about friends. Correspondents include Mary Hagner Nicholson Henry, Louisa Anderson Henry, his children, extended family members, William Uhler Hensel, Hiram B. Swarr, classmates, and friends. The dates range from 1850 to 1909.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan Henry, also known as Buck, was born on March 1, 1833. Just like his cousin, Harriet, Buck lost both of his parents and was taken in as James Buchanan's ward in 1840. During his early years, he attended several boarding schools and eventually graduated from the College of New Jersey. Though his interests remained with the arts, Buck went on to read law under an attorney named John Cadwalader. When James Buchanan assumed the presidency, he called for Buck to join him as his private secretary, a position known today as the Chief of Staff. While Buck worked at Washington, he found himself in frequent conflict with his Uncle. This conflict came to a head in 1858 when Buck proposed to his sweetheart, Mary Nicholson. Upset that Buck hadn't consulted him on the proposal, James Buchanan disapproved of the match. Buck left his position as private secretary and went on to marry Miss Nicholson. The couple would have two children, one of whom would survive into adulthood.
Soon after the birth of their second child, Mary Nicholson died of consumption, leaving Buck a widower. Later on, he married Louisa Anderson, and the two had six sons. After fourteen years of marriage, Louisa died. Buck would marry for a third time much later in his life to a woman named Margaret Grote Elliman. Buck was 71 and Margaret was 24. James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 3 Papers of James Buchanan Henry, Series 2 contains the financial and legal documents of James Buchanan Henry.
Subseries 1 includes bills, receipts, ledgers, and accounts with F. P. Freeman & Co., New York, Joseph Schell for footwear, and Lehigh University.
Subseries 2 contains the legal papers including a summons, deeds, and the marriage license of James Buchanan Henry and Mary Hagner Nicholson. The dates on these documents range from 1794 to 1905.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan Henry, also known as Buck, was born on March 1, 1833. Just like his cousin, Harriet, Buck lost both of his parents and was taken in as James Buchanan's ward in 1840. During his early years, he attended several boarding schools and eventually graduated from the College of New Jersey. Though his interests remained with the arts, Buck went on to read law under an attorney named John Cadwalader. When James Buchanan assumed the presidency, he called for Buck to join him as his private secretary, a position known today as the Chief of Staff. While Buck worked at Washington, he found himself in frequent conflict with his Uncle. This conflict came to a head in 1858 when Buck proposed to his sweetheart, Mary Nicholson. Upset that Buck hadn't consulted him on the proposal, James Buchanan disapproved of the match. Buck left his position as private secretary and went on to marry Miss Nicholson. The couple would have two children, one of whom would survive into adulthood.

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 5 Papers of Other Members of the Buchanan Family, Series 1 Correspondence contains papers from members of the Buchanan family, excluding James Buchanan, Harriet Lane Johnston, James Buchanan Henry and Edward Young Buchanan. Subseries 1 is correspondence from members of the Buchanan Family and Subseries 2 is correspondence to members of the Buchanan Family. The letters span over one hundred years, from 1809 through 1925, with the bulk of the items from 1845 to 1873.
The earliest items are excerpts of letters written by James Buchanan and his parents at the beginning of his law career and from his early political years. There is a collection of typed transcripts of letters to Maria Lois Buchanan, affectionately known as "Lodie," from her family who was taking care of James Buchanan at Wheatland from March through June 1868. The remaining letters are between various family members concerning the family and their well-being, as well as the purchasing of homes and financial matters.

Many additional members of James Buchanan's family are included in this part of the collection. Including the following relations: James Buchanan (1761-1821) and Elizabeth Speer (1767-1833) James Buchanan's parents; Harriet Buchanan (1802-1840), James Buchanan's sister; James Buchanan Lane (1814-1863), James Buchanan's nephew and Harriet Lane's older brother; Jessie Magaw, James Buchanan's niece from his sister, Maria Buchanan Magaw (1795-1849); Mary Nicholson Henry, James Buchanan Henry's first wife; and Louisa Anderson Henry James Buchanan Henry's second wife; Reginald E. Henry (Louisa and James' son) and Robert Edward Henry, Jr. (Louisa and James' grandson); Edward Y. Buchanan's wife, Ann Elizabeth Foster, and his daughters, Anne Buchanan (1838-1927), Harriet Buchanan (1841-1912), Henrietta ("Netsie") Buchanan (1844-1906) and Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt (1847-1920) (referred to as "Lois" or "Lodie"), and Alexander J. Cassatt (Lois Buchanan's husband). The letters to Maria Lois Buchanan show a good chronological history.

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 5 Papers of Other Members of the Buchanan Family, Series 2 Financial, Legal and Family Documents contains papers from members of the Buchanan Family, excluding James Buchanan, Harriet Lane Johnston, James Buchanan Henry and Edward Young Buchanan. Series 2 is divided into four subseries: Subseries 1 has bills, receipts, ledgers and accounts; Subseries 2 has speeches, certificates, and diplomas; Subseries 3 has legal papers; and Subseries 4 has estate and family records. The items span from the 1830s to 1900.
The series includes pages from family Bibles and a transcript from a family Bible that records the births and deaths of the family, from 1853 and 1997. There are also numerous items that do not have dates or the date has faded to a point of illegibility. There are a couple of diplomas for James (Jacobium) Buchanan, Edward Young Buchanan's son, and Gulielum (William) Buchanan, most likely William Speer Buchanan, James' younger brother, from Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut and New Ceasar College. The remaining items are school certificates to Maskell Ewing, Jr., Edward Y. Buchanan's grandson, and Andrew Jackson nomination and appointment of George W. Buchanan as the United States Attorney.

Sands Lane and their children. James Buchanan (1834-1871) attended Trinity College in Hartford, graduating in 1853. He also wrote one of the school songs "Good Old Trinity"1

The materials include a complementary ticket from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, calling cards, newspaper clippings, invitations to various events and weddings, a handwritten note from James Buchanan Henry, a business card of John Book, and a dinner menu of the Watch Hill House. Henry recounting his conversation with the secretary of the cemetery company where James Buchanan Henry’s father and sister are buried informing him that no more interments will be made in the old cemetery and that the tombstones of his father and sister are “their condition is any worse than any of the others”; wonders if Reg has joined the Catholic Church; that Rob has returned to barracks after camp; and will send a picture of his camp a little later. Henry reporting that he is temporarily in Pittsburgh running large department; misses the rural aspects of Greensburg and hates the heat and dirt of the city; is sorry about Rob’s hard luck; Reg sent him news from Lake George, which he would like to be there later when the family goes on its launch, but will be working; at least he will go camping at Conneaut Lake with his regiment. Envelope with postmarks and imprint of a stamp addressed to Mr. J. Buchanan Henry, Maryland Hotel, Annapolis, Maryland; in another hand: Willy on is removal with regrets from Greensburg to Pittsburg. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Letter from son James to J. B. Henry commenting of the war and the lack of the generals to do anything; Agunaldo has established a decent government; holidays aboard is almost like any other day; three enemy ships sunk on May 1 have been raised; few care for the new captain Whiting; is glad that Joe has a good position in the army; Curtis got married, making five in James’ class for which the war is blamed; has not met a girl since Honolulu; expects an expedition to leave for Iloilo tomorrow.
