Description
The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 2 contains the financial and legal documents of James Buchanan, including invoices and receipts, ledgers, accounts, deeds and land records, and estate papers, dated 1812-1883. Among these papers are financial papers including bank statements and memorandums; documents related to land in Clarion, PA; legal papers for the settlement of the Boyd estate and other properties; summaries of three cases decided by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania; a summary for the cost of a dinner in Russia in 1833; estate papers for family members and James Buchanan's will. Amos Slaymaker, Henry F. Slaymaker, Hiram B. Swarr, Edward Young Buchanan, Harriet Lane Johnston, and Henry E. Johnston are among the names found in these records.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. Swarr from Bowie & Williams noting that the Maryland constitution prohibits the passage of a special law concerning conveyance of title; stating that Mr. Sellman is willing to accept the deed if you concur in making in it a warranty of title; and adding that the heirs will benefit from the sale and no one else is likely to take notice. Letter from James Buchanan to H. B. Swarr after visiting Bedford Springs remarking that the only old Whig of consequence to abandon the party was Hiester; noting that the appointment of Mr. Schroeder (a true Democrat popular among the Germans) as postmaster was as much Swarr’s doing as his, refusing to appoint Chandler as Minister to Rome in spite of all the Catholic bishops and sending him to Naples instead, and refusing to appoint Schroeder as a register or receiver of a land office. The cup has a painted winter scene of a man and dog with a bridge and house in background. The sides and back are pink with a gilt rim, cup interior, handle and foot trim. Bottom has designer's signature.

Hand-painted scenes on both sides of this lozenge-shaped tureen and across the cover having a pinnacle gilt knob, in pink and gilt over a white background, the handles on he tureen are shaped as Egyptian cats in gilt terminating in gilt palmetto leaves. The rim is in gilt with a wide pink band following a narrow band of gilt and white background above a gilt foot.

Notes
James Buchanan Henry inherited this bust when his Uncle James Buchanan died; his cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston inherited the matching bust, which she later donated to the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
James Buchanan Henry bequeathed this bust to his son, Frank Anderson Henry, who donated it to the James Buchanan Foundation in 1960.
Letter from James Buchanan to W. Kennedy, critiquing a letter W. Kennedy wrote, saying that it had “too much good sense and sober argument to produce any sensible effect” when it came to the current state of public affairs. He also says that he will be able to assist W. Kennedy with a loan, bond, and mortgage of $3000. He writes to transmit them to Hiram B. Swarr Esq. of Lancaster, his man of transfer. 5 September 1863.

Scrapbook of ephemera, newspaper articles, and original letters kept by Hiram B. Swarr that includes items related to the 1856 Presidential election, the Democratic Committee of Lancaster County, and the estate of James Buchanan.
The inscription indicates that the scrapbook was given to Edward Elliott Bausman by his mother, Mary Swarr Bausman. Mary was the daughter of Hiram B. Swarr. It is unclear if Mary or Elliott compiled the scrapbook.
