Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

Letter 1 Letter concerns the bill of Miss Yates in the amount of 8½ cents. No date.
Letter 2 Letter making arrangements to send Miss Hobbs, Miss Dow, and the Misses Laumans for a Saturday appointment. Miss Lane will not be going, but Mr. John Ford, the driver of the carriage, is a careful driver. Wheatland, 26 September 1849.
Letter 3 Letter regretting not attending a musical presentation because of bad weather. Wheatland, 6 March 1850. Letter 4 Letter offering to send a carriage for Miss Theodora, the Misses Laumans, and his niece if they have permission to visit him. Wheatland, 13 August 1850. Letter 5 Letter announcing that Harriet Parker, sister of Miss Hetty, will accompany a pupil for the school. Wheatland, 18 November 1851.
Letter 6 Letter regretting that he cannot attend a function at the school tomorrow because of bad weather and because he has already accepted an invitation to attend the opening of the plank road between Lancaster and Petersburg. Wheatland, 7 December 1851.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston discussing plans for the summer for her family and him; saying that at 76 years of age, he preferred to stay home; expressing happiness that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms, but the boys are too old for him to control; looking forward to the visit of Mr. Schell on his birthday; lamenting the fact that he has “neither waiting nor cook” but that Lizzie is a tolerable cook; admitting that Peter’s participation in a “Negro riot at the door of the Negro church and is eluding the police”; reporting that Dr. Carpenter was not hurt very much but is hoping to become Collector of Internal Revenue; saying that Miss Hetty is better and will “be on a crutch” soon; saying that the Swarrs reported that Emily Baker will not be married until fall and that Mr. Baker, usually very talkative, has said nothing on the subject but has added A. Griffeth as a partner; reporting that Captain Magaw has a good command now; reporting sadly that Willie has the consumption and his sisters are nursing him; and saw Mrs. Forney at Mrs. Porter’s funeral and that the Nevins had visited her.
