Transcriptions of several pieces of correspondence to Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt from a number of individuals, including: A. J. Cassatt; her sisters, Anne Buchanan, Alice Buchanan and Henrietta Buchanan; her mother, Anne Foster Buchanan; her brother, Henry Buchanan; her cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston; and her father, Edward Y. Buchanan. All the correspondence is to Mary while she was visiting her cousin, Harriet Johnston, in Baltimore. Mary's stay was extended when Harriet left to see to James Buchanan at Wheatland in his last days before his death and Mary stayed with Harriet’s son. Some of the originals of Harriet’s letters are in Part 2 of this collection. Lancaster, PA; Altoona, PA; Oxford Parsonage, PA; Philadelphia, PA. 23 March 1868 through June 12, 1868.

Description
Letter from Mary E. Merritt, the headmistress at Harriet Lane’s school, to Harriet’s brother, James Buchanan Lane, regarding Harriet’s behavior, specifically her correspondence with a young man and her trips out of school. (The letter is dated 1825, however, this must be incorrect. Harriet was born in 1830. The letter mentions James’ recent wedding--James was married in 1845 which was when Harriet was in school in Charlestown, VA, now West Virginia). Charlestown, VA.

Weaver and her brother James B. Weaver; expecting the wines to sell well; hoping to meet with Mr. Howell in Laurel Hill; enclosing a note that Mr. Henry received from William and John O’Brien; planning to discuss the sale of the securities when he is in Lancaster; and having received the farm advertisements. The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr stating that Jessie Magaw is purchasing a house for which she urgently needs money due her from the estate; asking for the document for the heirs to sign regarding the $5000; hoping for Mr. Hiester’s comment on removal of the papers; and noting that although he had received Mr. Henry’s letter recently, it was not written after Mr. Henry had received his letter regarding the book. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons.
