Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester asking her pardon for not writing earlier; Mrs. Plitt still at Wheatland; Uncle well and calm as he awaits the outcome of the election today; wishing Lily had written more as a political writer; Robert Eden’s former dark red moustache; Eskridge getting along well using a crutch and cane; the toll that the campaign took on the family; in the election “right will prevail”; Emily Schaumburg’s staying with the Porters; Colonel Pleasonton’s engagement to a widow with many children and Addy’s reaction; and suggests that Lily’s father might follow the same example to give Lily some children to play with. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on the funeral of Miss Yeates and the lack of the old families in attendance, but led by the Cunninghams; commenting on Catharine’s will of a number of years ago and that her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, “bore the life of her sister with Christian resignation”; lamenting the last escapade of Thomas, who is back after quitting and getting his pocket picked of his earnings but that his wife Rosanna is an excellent cook; noting the “three young ones” give much pleasure to Miss Hetty; saying that Jessie, at the age of seventeen looks more like twenty, has good manners, an amenable disposition, “quite good looking,” leaning toward corpulence, will visit General Ramsay’s family in Washington, whose daughter is a good friend; noting that Blanche Nevin is unwell; complaining about the lack of communication from Mr. Schell, but James Henry might have some information; complimenting her on her housekeeping and asking her to cultivate the female members of the Johnston family; looking forward to another visit to “the Palace” but wants only “common fare”; and noting that Mrs. Steinman and sister visited a few days ago. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore.
