Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston
Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston rejoicing that “his namesake” has been baptized; noting that Mrs. Shunk did accompany her husband to Washington as Mary Black supposed; expressing happiness that “little Frank Scroder has recovered; conjecturing on the whereabouts of Miss Snyder, probably with her sister Mrs. Elsegood; elated that Henrietta has gone to Baltimore and might find a beau; repeating the gossip from Blanche Nevin that Harriet Lane had married Octavius Norris of Baltimore; thanking her for the cigars and cheese even though he did not like them, and the stockings, which he did, praying that she will “send me no more cheese”; and hoping his new-found relationship with Mrs. Lane will continue.
