Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston discussing plans for the summer for her family and him; saying that at 76 years of age, he preferred to stay home; expressing happiness that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms, but the boys are too old for him to control; looking forward to the visit of Mr. Schell on his birthday; lamenting the fact that he has “neither waiting nor cook” but that Lizzie is a tolerable cook; admitting that Peter’s participation in a “Negro riot at the door of the Negro church and is eluding the police”; reporting that Dr. Carpenter was not hurt very much but is hoping to become Collector of Internal Revenue; saying that Miss Hetty is better and will “be on a crutch” soon; saying that the Swarrs reported that Emily Baker will not be married until fall and that Mr. Baker, usually very talkative, has said nothing on the subject but has added A. Griffeth as a partner; reporting that Captain Magaw has a good command now; reporting sadly that Willie has the consumption and his sisters are nursing him; and saw Mrs. Forney at Mrs. Porter’s funeral and that the Nevins had visited her. Swarr her attorney to draw up estate papers; admitting that he opened the enclosed letter from Mr. Florey in which he wants to close a loan to her but with conditions; thinking that the influence of Parson Rosenmiller on Dr. Lane would affect adversely the estates of the family; asking that she find out from James Henry whether New York paid interest in gold or “depreciated paper”; finding pleasure in visiting his Chester County farm; and rejoicing at Mrs. Henry’s recovery. Swarr after visiting Bedford Springs remarking that the only old Whig of consequence to abandon the party was Hiester; noting that the appointment of Mr. Schroeder (a true Democrat popular among the Germans) as postmaster was as much Swarr’s doing as his, refusing to appoint Chandler as Minister to Rome in spite of all the Catholic bishops and sending him to Naples instead, and refusing to appoint Schroeder as a register or receiver of a land office. Henry to Louisa Anderson commenting on her aunt’s letter stating that both mother and child are doing well; sent a letter to a friend enclosing a photograph; the German of Parker was successful and Jessie stayed until late; visited Miss McKenzie and likes her very much; shot a rabbit and partridge; sending her a paper from Orvis in Jacksonville who published part of James Buchanan Henry’s letter; and the economy is so poor that he will not fill any orders but hopes next year will be better. Envelope with postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Care Dr. W. C. Anderson, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. Both letter and envelope heavily water damaged rendering parts unreadable.
