Description

Insert 2 Deed. Jacob Eshleman of Strasburg Township to Levi Pownall of Sadsbury Township. 204 acres and the allowance for roads. 2 April 1803. (Original housed in oversized box.)
Admin/Biographical History
The Christiana Resistance, commonly referred to as the "Christiana Riot" occurred in September of 1851 in Christiana, Pennsylvania, a borough in Lancaster County. The events known as the Christiana Resistance include an attack from slaveholders in Maryland on the inhabitants and home of William Parker a free black man living in Christiana, Pennsylvania. The slaveholders crossed the state border, and attempted claim and return the freedom seekers as their property, under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
The violent confrontation resulted in the death of Edward Gorsuch, a slaveholder, and the escape of William Parker to freedom in Canada. Edward's son, Dickinson Gorsuch, was wounded and taken to the farm of Levi Pownall, where the Pownall family nursed him back to health. Historically, this event challenged the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and is considered a precursor to the Civil War.

Custodial History
Moores Memorial Library (Christiana, Pa.) owns some of the most significant manuscript material relating to the Christiana Resistance. The staff of Moores Memorial Library, part of the Library System of Lancaster County, and the Lancaster County Historical Society worked together to arrange and preserve the collection and create a finding aid to make the materials accessible to the public.
The collection contains correspondence to and from the Pownall family regarding the incident, notes regarding kidnappings in the area from 1850-1851, photocopied pages of Dickinson Gorsuch's diary, and published accounts. An 1896 photograph shows Peter Woods and Samuel Hopkins, survivors of the riot. There are also photographs of the Christiana Riot House, the Pownall farm, and key figures in the riot and at the Treason Trials of 1851.
The staff of Moores Memorial Library, part of the Library System of Lancaster County, and the Lancaster County Historical Society worked together to arrange and preserve the collection and create a finding aid to make the materials accessible to the public. Funds for this project were provided by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) in 2001.

Description
Deed printed on laid paper (with scalloped top edge) by Francis Bailey. Heading at top has "This Indenture made" in large fraktur-like lettering, surrounded by ornamentation including architectural device of architrave supported by squat columns of balusters with the words 'Peace and Plenty" interspersed within. At very top is "LANCASTER: Printed by FRANCIS BAILEY, in King's-Street."
Printed text has blanks filled in by hand in black ink as well as signatures below, on June 18 & 20 of 1774. Walter and Elizabeth Newman of "Hydelberg" Twp of Lancaster County are selling to "Frederick Kapp of "Hydelberg" Twp. Berks County a piece of ground in Heidelburg Twp of Berks Co. (at or near the "Town of Newbury"). Signed three times at bottom by Justice of the Peace Peter Spycker.
Two overlapping diamond shapes of paper affixed with sealing wax near bottom right. Reverse side has handwritten description of legal deed transaction for a Berks Co. property being sold by Walter Newman and wife to Frederick Kapp.
Bailey was the official printer to both the U.S. Congress and the Commonwealth. He operated a printing office at 14 W. King St. from 1773-1780, from where he produced many historic imprints including Thomas Paine's "Crisis No. 4" and the Articles of Confederation (1777).

Deed for 102 Locust Street, Columbia, Pennsylvania
Description
Deed conveying the lot at 102 Locust St., Columbia from Washington Kendrick and Isaac and Ellen S. Kendrick of Philadelphia, as power of attorney for Washington Kendrick, to Harford Fraley of Columbia. Recorded in the Recorder's Office, Lancaster, Book I, volume 8, page 130, 29 November 1857. With the deed is a Power of Attorney from Washington Kendrick to Isaac Kendrick, both sellers. Also, an explanatory note from Blanton Welsh that the deed covered the house at 332 Locust St., where the Welsh family lived from 1863 to 1882. Note: In December, 1863, four months after Thomas Welsh died, their Walnut St. home was auctioned to satisfy creditors. The transaction closed in March 1864. On April 1, 1864, Samuel D. Young bought the 332 Locust St. property from Harford Fraley for $1,500, then sold it to Annie on May 13, 1864 for $1. Recorded in Lancaster Book F, volume 9, page 565; Book G, volume 9, pages 390-391.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
