Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. The Norwich Aurora - Extra, Norwich, Connecticut. The issue is dedicated to Buchanan's inauguration. It provides an eighteenth century play-by-play of Buchanan's life beginning with the Presidential election, travel from Wheatland to Washington, and his inaugural address. There are other articles of national importance regarding the Missouri Compromise and the Supreme Court ruling in the Dred Scott case; Kansas; President Pierce; and George Washington. The local news pertains to the upcoming Connecticut state and local elections. Corner of pages 3 and 4 is missing.
