Swarr after visiting Bedford Springs remarking that the only old Whig of consequence to abandon the party was Hiester; noting that the appointment of Mr. Schroeder (a true Democrat popular among the Germans) as postmaster was as much Swarr’s doing as his, refusing to appoint Chandler as Minister to Rome in spite of all the Catholic bishops and sending him to Naples instead, and refusing to appoint Schroeder as a register or receiver of a land office. This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Lane, Esq. praising his appraising of some matting and for acting wisely in not buying Buchanan’s house at this time because of taking too much capital, but Buchanan will not offer it for sale publicly. Written on the blank page is James B. Lane’s reply stating that he does not wish to board but will do so until circumstances improve. He will inform Mr. Meredith that all he wants from the furniture at Wheatland is the matting. On the same stationery is a copy of James Lane’s reply from Lancaster, stating that he wants to exchange housekeeping for a property of his own and that Mr. Fortney wishes Buchanan to inform Mr. Meredith that he will not want any furniture from Wheatland except the matting.
