Letter from Alfred [Pleasanton] to Harriet Lane expressing his choice for a trip to Canada; his delight in taking Clemmie’s advice to borrow silverware from Mrs. Turnbull just in time to entertain (he is a soldier); his meeting with General Harney’s married daughter and French son-in-law who are on their way to St. Louis; his meeting with Col. Geary, governor of Kansas, who is certain that he can contain the trouble there; promising to work for James Buchanan if he consents to their trip; and learning that the black Republicans in Congress have stopped insisting that troops be removed from Kansas. [Washington].
