Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester recounting her recent journey from Philadelphia to Lancaster, chats with Mr. Longenecker and Mr. Slaymaker, an encounter with Major Watson, the return of Lily’s brother from his travels, the many “admirers” of Lily’s aunt, especially Emerson, and asking her to send forgotten items to her by way of James Henry when he calls, in particular her corsets, an earring and her picture. 11 envelopes postmarked 1852 through 1868 addressed to Miss Harriet Lane or to Mrs. Henry E. Johnston and one to Mrs. George W. Baker. Five are addressed care of Wilson McCandless, Wm. J. B. Lane, Frederick Brown, Esq., George Plitt, Esquire, or Robert Tyler, Esquire. Three from James Buchanan carry his signature and free franking, one has an intact seal; 2 others carry intact seals; 3 carry stamps; 2 are marked “paid”; 7 carry postmarks; and one has no markings.
