Summary
In 1832, a group of girls in a school operated by the British-born organist of St James Episcopal Church in Lancaster were disappointed that the school was not planning to honor George Washington's birthday with a day off from school. The girls appealed to Bishop Bowman, the rector of St James Episcopal. In response, the Bishop wrote a short poem honoring Washington. The girls signed the poem, presented it to the school, and had their day off.
