Weathervane, sheet iron, with iron upright support and brackets. In the shape of an Indian striding forward with right arm raised while holding a long hatchet. Directional arrow (spear?) is below waist, slanting upwards.
Pictorial sampler by Elizabeth Martin, dated 1825, depicting Rock Ford plantation house. Silk embroidery on linen is 3 shades of blue, dark green, light green, white, black, grey, and at least 4 shades of brown (including tan). Original frame is likely walnut with reeded molding and corner blocks; lapped corner joints.
Strawberry vine border. Alphabet top is centered over 1825 date and flanked by 8-pointed star each side. Beneath date is brick residence, showing front and gable end, believed to be Rock Ford plantation house. The 3-bay dwelling has 2 arched doorways, 8 windows, and two chimneys. House is flanked by a near-symmetrical arrangement of 2 large flowering tree motifs at each side; outer one surmounted by a large bird. Small crown at each side next to border.
Three verses below house; main verse at center states: "Elizabeth Martin is my name / Lampeter is my Station / heaven is my dwelling Place / and christ is my salvation / When i am dead and in my Grave / and all my bones are rotton / When this you see remember me / Least i should be forgotton." Flanked by verse of wisdom at left and religious verse at right, each framed by a flowering vine. Under verses is a horizontal row of 9 sets of initials all ending in the letter "M", certainly indicating Martin family members.
Bottom third of sampler is a large, central flowering plant flanked on either side by confronting female figures, each holding a bird on raised hand toward the central floral motif. Each woman is standing in front of a large satin-stitch embroidered haystack(?), with a large bird atop each.

Inherited by Winona Ressler, then passed on to sister Elizabeth Ressler (Findley) upon Winona's death. Maker was the great, great, great grandmother of donor's wife Elizabeth Ressler Findley (born July 31, 1918) and her sister Winona. Descent in family through their maternal grandmother. Family history states sampler was made when Elizabeth Martin was 10-12 years old.
Research: Parents of Ressler sisters were Jacob and Emma K. Mowrer Ressler. Maternal grandmother was likely Mrs. Mowrer?
Age darkened linen. Dark around edge to upper left, across top, above house and around upper right edge area. Slight fraying in some areas around edge.
Stain around stem of right flower in bottoom central flowering design motif. Two dark stains above the word "my" in right phrase, a 3rd stain to right at base of flowering plant.
Conserved and remounted in original frame by Dora Shotzberger of Winterthur in 1986.

Pair of ice skates (A-B), housed in custom-fitted wooden case (C).
Skates constructed of steel plate in shape of foot surmounted on a 1/4-inch-thick blade terminating in a scrolled toe. Skates are identical with no right or left differentiation. One skate has four additional holes in heel. Three leather straps with buckles are riveted to footplate. Dimensions of skate: H: 4 1/2" W: 4" L: 12"
Bottom of each skate's footplate is stamped: "EICHHOLTZ & BRO/ LANCASTER, PA."
Box, softwood, dovetail construction, re-painted flat green. Under paint is a ghost of floral decoration on lid, front and sides. Has hinged lid leading to fitted interior covered with coarse green fabric pasted and tacked to wood and edged with braiding. Latch hooks on front to secure lid.
Made by Eichholtz & Bro. (Henry Clay Eichholtz (1830-1918) and Robert Lindsay Eichholtz.

Research done by Tom Ryan suggests that according to Lancaster Directories, Eichholtz & Bro. were operating in Lancaster City possibly as early as 1858 and at least as late as 1870. Jacob Eichholtz's sons, Robert Lindsay and Henry Clay, were in partnership, listed as gunsmiths by 1863 and guns and cutlery by 1866 until at least 1870.
Skates largely intact, metal has slight corrosion overall, leather straps deteriorated with losses (2 missing on one skate and one on the other). Box appears to have been repainted and is very soiled. Interior has worn "upholstery" with losses of braiding. Hingers have been replaced; handle is missing at front.

Family register for Metzger family, hand-drawn, lettered and watercolored, horizontal orientation on wove paper, attributed to Karl Seybold (arctive c. 1813-1846). Format is the English style of register rather than Pa. German. Framed in molded softwood frame with very dark brown finish.
Within an inked double-line border is a grouping at top of rectangles with text re: parents. Father George Metzger born in Conestoga Twp.(1799-1845) and mother Maria Huber Metzger born in Boro of Strasburg (1804-1890), married 1821. Polychrome flowers surround text blocks. Father was Lutheran, mother (daughter of Abraham and Maria Longenecker Huber), apparently Mennonite (unbaptized as a child).
Below text blocks are 8 circles bordered w/ polychrome stylized flowers. Each circle records birth of a child. Birthplaces indicate pattern of residence:1st child born Lancaster Boro (1824), 2nd & 3rd Lancaster Twp (1827-1829), 4th & 5th in Manheim Twp (1831-1833) and last three in Warwick Twp (1836-1841).
Karl F. T. Seybold came to America in 1806, becoming a school teacher in Northampton Co. by 1813. His desire to join the Harmony Society in Ambridge, Pa. was unfulfilled, so he moved with his wife to Lancaster Co. in the 1830s, reportedly at the urging of his mother-in-law. He taught school and apparently lived in a Menno. community, doing mostly birth records and family registers for them (names like Funk, Hostetter, Herr, Kauffman, Huber, Miller, etc.).

Old cardboard back has mailing label from L.E. Waterman Co. in New York City to W.H. Corey, Jr. of Owego, N.Y. A 12-cent stamp affixed to corner dates from early 20th century.
Paper soiling, foxing and scattered stains overall; significant moisture stains along bottom right border and smaller ones near center as well as along paper edges. Paper has significant spidery, stained cracks extending inwards from both right and left edges, clustered at center. Each side is repaired on reverse with a 2.5" - 3"-wide vertical band of paper tape, causing the dark staining seen at cracks on front. Vertical paper cracks at fold lines extend in from top and bottom. Frame has been recut to current size and has nicks and moderate wear. Corrugated cardboard backing replaced with acid-free board, Dec. 2004..
Dovetail construction, wire nails used on interior. Inside is a till and a sliding drawer; shoe molding on all bottom inside corners. Below mid-line molding are two thumbnail-molded, side-by-side drawers with nailed joints and fitted with locks, escutcheons and bail-type brasses in batwing style.
Lid is two joined boards with ends tenoned into end boards and pegged, cutting board fashion. Edge molding is intrinsic, not applied, except for light molding attached to underside to create lip. Lid has strap hinges with fishtail terminals and is fitted with a lock and brass batwing-type escutcheon. Medallion is relief-carved into center of lid top with "18 SF 40." The meaning of this 1840 date is a mystery.
Molding at the base of chest; four ogee bracket feet.

Provenance: One of twelve pieces of furniture transferred to this museum from the Lancaster County Historical Society. These pieces were part of the estate of Sarah Ann Stauffer (1913-1996) whose property, Lime Kiln Farm, was bequeathed to LCHS upon her death in 1996.
Clarke Hess had suggested the chest may have been made for Sarah Ann Frantz and the 1840 date may be her birth year. Often, he says, pieces of furniture were made for a child or heir at the time of the settling of an estate.
Research: Sarah Ann Frantz (sister of Sarah A. Stauffer's gr-grandfather Henry L. Frantz) was born 1835, Grandfather Samuel O. Frantz was born 1861, so this theory is incorrect. (The East Hempfield Twp. farm of Sarah A. Frantz is located on both the 1875 and 1899 Atlases, SW of Rohrerstown and S.O. Frantz is shown nearby on 1899 Atlas.)
Top has large crack through center and many dents, scratches and score marks. Loss at right end of mid--line molding of front. Multiple cracks in sides. Repairs done to feet. Refinished with heavy stain and varnish on lid and all interior surfaces. Original finish on front is heavily alligatored; finish on sides is crackled. Interior surfaces have had paper and textiles adhere to wet varnish. Sliding drawer has crack in bottom.

Executioner's hood, or cap, of "black Albert twill serge", was made by John C. Dinan and mentioned twice in the June 29 New Era article "MURDERERS PAY PENALTY." It was worn by Lee Furman, convicted murderer, for his hanging on June 29, 1905.
Hood is form-fitted to a round head shape, with a protrusion at the middle of side (for nose?). Hood narrows at the neck and flares strongly out to shoulders and extends to mid-chest in length. Vertical flap extends from bottom to perhaps jaw line, where there is a small, circular opening, likely to accomodate the rope. Flap is secured by 3 cloth-covered buttons. Expertly sewn, likely by a local seamstress or tailor.
Also included with gift is a postal card postmarked Sept. 9, 1905 from H.S. Eckels & Co. in Philadelphia to Mr. J. Fred. Fisher at 128 N. Duke St., Lancaster, PA. message is handwritten in black ink: "Hood use(d) on Lee Furman Hung Thursday June 29, 1905 for the killing of Samuel Ressler "Toll gate Keeper" July 1, 1904." Hood was purchased by Mayor Smithgall for $100 from a woman whose father reportedly had acquired it from the mortician. Postal card is unexplained (J. Frederick Fisher was a clerk for the P.R.R. and boarded at 504 N. Queen St. according to the 1890 Directory.
Hand towel, plain-weave linen, elaborately decorated with blue and red cotton cross stitch as well as drawn thread panels. Hanging tabs are plain-weave linen tape, 3/8" wide and very long.
Panel #1 has "MARIA" at the top flanked by large floral trees growing out of hearts. Second line reads: "MACDALLNA DAMY" and 3rd line is: "MY HAND AND NWEDLE." Below are 5 large tree motifs grounded on a horizontal embroidered line, followed by 8 small grounded trees.
Panel #2 is a drawn thread panel w/ cotton darn-stitched designs. Drawn threads stop short of sides -- unusual.
Panel # 3 has five blue and red motifs: star at center flanked by crowned peacocks, in turn flanked by geometric motifs.
Panel # 4 is a tripartite design: center has "HF" within an ornately embroidered red and blue heart, flanked by drawn thread panels w/ cotton darn-stitched trees surmounted by birds. (Initials stand for future husband Henry Fenstermacher, married the following year,1837.)
Panel #5 is very similar to panel #3.
Panel #6 is another drawn thread panel stopping short of sides, decorated w/ cotton darn-stitched geometric designs.
Panel #7 has upper case alphabet ending with the date 1836.
Panel #8 has three lines: "CHRISTOPHER/ DAMY CATHARINE/ DAMY A D 1836." (parents)
Plain self fringe at bottom has an applied short panel of linen with an elaborate knotted self fringe.

Seller pinned on a note stating the mate to this towel (made by sister Elizabeth) was sold in the Rich and Joan Smith sale for $2400, inventory # CB29. Both towels illustrated in This is the Way I Pass My Time, p. 31.

Birth & Baptismal Certificate for Maria "Temi" (Demmy) printed in German language by "Johann Ritter und Comp." of Reading. Darkened golden oak frame.
Central text within boilerplate border; a putto above, angels standing on clouds at top sides and birds on branches at lower sides. Text infilled by unknown hand states Maria was born Oct. 26, 1806 in Manheim Twp. to Christoph Temi and his wife Catarina, nee Etienne. Maria was baptized May 10, 1807 by Rev. August Miehlenberg and the witnesses were Mathis Wolff and his wife Maria. Infill in printed fraktur hand includes interesting line extensions drawn to fill in gaps
Heavily watercolored with dense reds, blue and green on all images and borders. This version of Ritter's print is one of many variations printed in the early 1820s (see Klaus Stopp, pp. 182-186).
Inscribed "Mary" twice at top of reverse side; once in pencil and once in brown ink with decorative scrolling line surrounding name.
Note: See hand towel (P.04.26.1) done by "Maria Macdallna Damy" in 1836 (Younger sister of Maria). Another nearly identical towel (Plate 14 in This is the Way I Pass My Time) was done by sister Elizabeth Damy in the same year. Both sisters married the following year in 1837, Maria to Henry Fenstermacher, whose initials are on her towel in a central heart. Also included on towel are parents' names "Christopher and Catharine Damy."
