“The Balls are Rolling – Clear the Track.” Large cartoon favoring Fremont and Dayton as proponents of the Constitution, Liberty and Union sit like an eagle above the fray and Pierce and Buchanan are being crushed by the platform adopted by the Democrats at the Cincinnati convention, with Kansas being the major scene of conflict. James Buchanan, as written by himself, and set to music by an old Democrat to the tune of “Poor Old Horse Let Him Die!” Price “Half a Jimmy!” [Copyright secured in Cuban Bonds.] A song liberally sprinkled with “footnotes” that “prove” the contentions presented in the poem that Buchanan is no real Democrat. The appendix sets landmarks for honest Democrats. 12 pp. Lancaster.

Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester asking her pardon for not writing earlier; Mrs. Plitt still at Wheatland; Uncle well and calm as he awaits the outcome of the election today; wishing Lily had written more as a political writer; Robert Eden’s former dark red moustache; Eskridge getting along well using a crutch and cane; the toll that the campaign took on the family; in the election “right will prevail”; Emily Schaumburg’s staying with the Porters; Colonel Pleasonton’s engagement to a widow with many children and Addy’s reaction; and suggests that Lily’s father might follow the same example to give Lily some children to play with.
