Opinion of Judge Black regarding provisions of James Buchanan’s will: canes are not included in the category of wearing apparel; the sum of $12,000, the valuation of Wheatland in the will, is to be deducted from Harriet Lane Johnston’s one fourth of the general estate, any pecuniary value of James Buchanan’s papers must be divided among the legatees, but the executors may use their judgment in distributing papers of only sentimental value ; and a copy of only the canes and papers provisions in another hand. Letter from Henry E. Johnston to H. B. Swarr asking if the paper as amended was acceptable to Edward Y. Buchanan and if any successor of Mr. Reed including Mr. Gillette had been finalized, and citing an article in The Galaxy (magazine) by Judge Black urging immediate action on the matter. Baltimore.

Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr informing him that Judge Black had asked to meet with James Buchanan Henry and himself, but that he could not because Mr. Henry had left and because he is opposed to Judge Black’s appointment as James Buchanan’s biographer, because he disapproves of Judge Black’s letter to the New York Herald in January 1870. This letter concerned the “consternation & grief” which the Cabinet felt on hearing James Buchanan’s response to the South Carolina Commissioners. In fact the changes in President Buchanan’s “views and proceedings” were caused by the secessionists in Charleston. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane rejoicing that she and Mrs. Roosevelt weathered a storm and arrived safely in New York; saying that Judge Black was supposed to come but might not emphasizing he was “mighty uncertain,” having invited Miss Slaymaker, Miss Old and Miss Grace to dine tomorrow; and announcing that Miss Blanche and the younger Miss Johnston invited him and Miss Hetty to a knitting party, which he will not attend. With envelope addressed to Harriet in care of Judge Roosevelt in New York. Wheatland.
