Large cartoon set in a cock-fighting ring, entitled “The Great Match at Baltimore, between the ‘Illinois Bantam’ and ‘the Old Cock’ of the White House,” depicting Buchanan as a “used up old rooster” beaten by Stephen Douglas, with Breckenridge being put into the ring by Henry Clay and an onlooker commenting on Buchanan’s demise. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing joy at her joining the church and asking that the engraving she proposes to have framed be given to his brother Edward since James has no appropriate place to hang it; intending to have the two boxes of champagne sent from Michael’s warehouse today; stating that Miss Hetty, complaining of “violent dyspeptic symptoms,” will expose herself about the gardens and the grounds; and reporting that he has thanked Mr. Carlisle, in her name, for the photograph. Agreement between Elliott T. Lane and James Buchanan concerning funds of Jane B. Lane, Elliott’s wife and James’ sister, and in case she makes no will, how the estate will be divided. Involves bequeaths from her father, James Buchanan, and her mother, Elizabeth Buchanan. Also mentioned in the agreement are her sister, Harriett Henry, and her brother, the Reverend Edward Y.
