Description
Large cartoon set in a cock-fighting ring, entitled “The Great Match at Baltimore, between the ‘Illinois Bantam’ and ‘the Old Cock’ of the White House,” depicting Buchanan as a “used up old rooster” beaten by Stephen Douglas, with Breckenridge being put into the ring by Henry Clay and an onlooker commenting on Buchanan’s demise. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr informing him that Judge Black had asked to meet with James Buchanan Henry and himself, but that he could not because Mr. Henry had left and because he is opposed to Judge Black’s appointment as James Buchanan’s biographer, because he disapproves of Judge Black’s letter to the New York Herald in January 1870. This letter concerned the “consternation & grief” which the Cabinet felt on hearing James Buchanan’s response to the South Carolina Commissioners. In fact the changes in President Buchanan’s “views and proceedings” were caused by the secessionists in Charleston. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

advising her to send all correspondence about her cousin’s, Dr. Lane’s, estate to him as a precautionary manner; recalling his pleasant dining evening with the Hiesters even though she wore a “long thick cloth Frock on the hottest day of the Season”; saying that Miss Hetty suggested inviting James Henry and his wife to visit; and stating that the case of Mr. Lane’s estate has not been decided. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane enclosing $100 at her request and two letters, one of which he opened to learn of James Henry and his wife, and expressing disappointment with the engraving. He learned that Governor Hutchinson wrote letters to a private secretary before he became governor, not to the Home Secretary while governor. Swarr asking that Mr. Russell pay the principal of his bond if at all possible, and if not, asking if he could borrow money from the estate for his forthcoming trip abroad, promising to pay 6 percent on money for which they are now getting 4 percent; noting that Mr. Henry is coming this week; noting that his son William has sailed in the Saranak for Paris via Liverpool; and wondering whether the estate is responsible to the heirs for money actually earned, whether it be 6 percent or 4 percent.
