Swarr after visiting Bedford Springs remarking that the only old Whig of consequence to abandon the party was Hiester; noting that the appointment of Mr. Schroeder (a true Democrat popular among the Germans) as postmaster was as much Swarr’s doing as his, refusing to appoint Chandler as Minister to Rome in spite of all the Catholic bishops and sending him to Naples instead, and refusing to appoint Schroeder as a register or receiver of a land office. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr informing him that Judge Black had asked to meet with James Buchanan Henry and himself, but that he could not because Mr. Henry had left and because he is opposed to Judge Black’s appointment as James Buchanan’s biographer, because he disapproves of Judge Black’s letter to the New York Herald in January 1870. This letter concerned the “consternation & grief” which the Cabinet felt on hearing James Buchanan’s response to the South Carolina Commissioners. In fact the changes in President Buchanan’s “views and proceedings” were caused by the secessionists in Charleston. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

advising her to send all correspondence about her cousin’s, Dr. Lane’s, estate to him as a precautionary manner; recalling his pleasant dining evening with the Hiesters even though she wore a “long thick cloth Frock on the hottest day of the Season”; saying that Miss Hetty suggested inviting James Henry and his wife to visit; and stating that the case of Mr. Lane’s estate has not been decided. He learned that Governor Hutchinson wrote letters to a private secretary before he became governor, not to the Home Secretary while governor. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane sadly reporting that “Dick, the Canary Bird” was killed by an owl or other “varment,” saying that the dinner with the Hiesters was pleasant enough and Mr. Hiester did not feel uncomfortable in “long-tailed coat” but he needs to learn more about “the rules of Society,” and that Blanche Nevin is sure that Captain Franklin and Miss Sherman are truly engaged even though he “did not distinguish himself at the Battle of Chancellorville.” Wheatland.
