James Buchanan, as written by himself, and set to music by an old Democrat to the tune of “Poor Old Horse Let Him Die!” Price “Half a Jimmy!” [Copyright secured in Cuban Bonds.] A song liberally sprinkled with “footnotes” that “prove” the contentions presented in the poem that Buchanan is no real Democrat. The appendix sets landmarks for honest Democrats. 12 pp. Lancaster.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. “The Great American Buck Hunt of 1856.” Large cartoon depicting James Buchanan and a stag “Old Buck” as he bounds toward the White House being hunted by John C. Fremont, mired in black mud as his “Kansas” gun explodes. H. W. Berntheisel acknowledging receipt of his letter, apologizing for not writing a longer letter, and enclosing a copy an engraving of “Hon James Buchanan” by Draper, Welch & Co. Letter from James Buchanan to H. B. Swarr after visiting Bedford Springs remarking that the only old Whig of consequence to abandon the party was Hiester; noting that the appointment of Mr. Schroeder (a true Democrat popular among the Germans) as postmaster was as much Swarr’s doing as his, refusing to appoint Chandler as Minister to Rome in spite of all the Catholic bishops and sending him to Naples instead, and refusing to appoint Schroeder as a register or receiver of a land office.
