Letter from Nahum Capen to Harriet Lane Johnston referring to the forty letters that he had received from President Buchanan. The letters had been relayed from Mr. Reed to Mr. Curtis to Rev. Dr. Buchanan, who has unpacked 18 of them and not yet found the paper giving the conversation between President Buchanan and Col. Benton. Mr. Capen would like to give her his index to the letters and visit her in Baltimore if she wishes. Mt. Ida.

Letter from Henry E. Johnston to H. B. Swarr mentioning Mrs. Johnston’s severe illness; hoping that the servants Francis and Thomas will receive equal shares of the estate; noting that Mrs. Johnston believed that important private letters of her uncle were displaced or removed from Wheatland last summer by Rev. Edward Young Buchanan during her short absence; asking if Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Henry have agreed to pay Mr. Reed the additional $5000; noting that the rise or fall of stocks after division should have no effect on their distribution; criticizing the broker handling the sale of securities; and urging the prompt closing of the estate. Statement listing lots #1-15 in Orange Street part of the estate of the late E. E. Lane: Lots #1-3 sold to Thos. D. Kelly; lots #4-6 sold to Jno. K. Bitner; lots #7-8 sold to W. W. Hensel; lots #9-10 sold to Geo. K. Reed, and lots #11-15 sold to Hirsh Brothers for a total of $4427.20. H. B. Swarr (attorney for Harriet Lane Johnston) acknowledges receiving $2213.60 from S. H. Reynolds for R. S. Jenkins on 2 April 1869.
