Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr informing him that Judge Black had asked to meet with James Buchanan Henry and himself, but that he could not because Mr. Henry had left and because he is opposed to Judge Black’s appointment as James Buchanan’s biographer, because he disapproves of Judge Black’s letter to the New York Herald in January 1870. This letter concerned the “consternation & grief” which the Cabinet felt on hearing James Buchanan’s response to the South Carolina Commissioners. In fact the changes in President Buchanan’s “views and proceedings” were caused by the secessionists in Charleston. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson stating that he has to go with the President and the Cabinet to the Capitol for signing of a number of bills and he has to announce them as fast as they are signed; therefore he will not be able to go with her unless the bills move faster than he thinks; and that her father is better. Envelope with no postmark and no stamp addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson at Dr. Hagner, Washington. [Washington, D.C., 1858 or 1859].

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane telling her that Miss Hetty and he are well, Mr. Hiester and his bride are visiting Philadelphia and New York, and that Mr. Swarr and Mr. Brown attended their wedding reception along with much of local society except for the Reynolds. Wheatland.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane sadly reporting that “Dick, the Canary Bird” was killed by an owl or other “varment,” saying that the dinner with the Hiesters was pleasant enough and Mr. Hiester did not feel uncomfortable in “long-tailed coat” but he needs to learn more about “the rules of Society,” and that Blanche Nevin is sure that Captain Franklin and Miss Sherman are truly engaged even though he “did not distinguish himself at the Battle of Chancellorville.” Wheatland.

Swarr asking that Mr. Russell pay the principal of his bond if at all possible, and if not, asking if he could borrow money from the estate for his forthcoming trip abroad, promising to pay 6 percent on money for which they are now getting 4 percent; noting that Mr. Henry is coming this week; noting that his son William has sailed in the Saranak for Paris via Liverpool; and wondering whether the estate is responsible to the heirs for money actually earned, whether it be 6 percent or 4 percent.
