Commissioners' Orders for Payment
Description
This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.

The record group is organized chronologically, then arranged by order number within each year.

Description
Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester enjoying a cottage rented by Mrs. Shapter far from London with a crashing ocean at her feet and refusing to leave when Uncle and Mr. Appleton called for her; mentioning the visit to London of the Corcorans and Louly, their child, and that Mr. C. is happy; commenting on the Queen’s visit to France; saying she and Uncle will depart for home on October 6, even though his successor has not been named; expressing her regrets in leaving such a beautiful country; coming visit to nearby Carisbrooke Castle; commenting on the health of Mrs. Plitt and her friendship with Mrs. Lathrop; and expressing astonishment at the adventures of Mrs. F. Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson saying he delayed going to Captain Ingraham’s to await her letter, but it did not come; the delay in the mails resulting an missed an event at Miss McKim’s; he is happy that she is surrounded by friends; offering advice in getting over a “little affair” which will disappear if they love each other; Mr. Scharff was married at noon and James Buchanan Henry is very happy for his dear friend; will go to the farewell reception of the Napiers and later to a ball given by Mrs. Brown; sends regards to Miss Margie and apologizes for not receiving her invitation on time; and Dr. Dau. Envelope with no stamp and no postmark addressed to Miss Nicholson, Care of John L McKim, Esq., Baltimore. Washington, D.C.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane agreeable to her spending more time in New York; objecting to her seeing Mrs. Brown on her return because she would be “exposed to the company of a person” whose name he cannot mention “with Christian temper”; saying he will not go to Havana or Nassau; feeling sorry that he cannot tell what Harry Magraw proposes; commenting on newspaper accounts of the history of his administration; expressing happiness over hearing from Dr. Gwen, who is in prison; admonishing her not to address her letters to “Ex-President”; and enclosing two letters “from a crazy lover of yours,” which he had opened. With envelope addressed to Harriet at 836 Broadway, New York.

Description
All cotton block quilt of pieced blocks alternating with white blocks. Solid white blocks have quilted feather wreaths; alternate blocks have a geometric design of triangles and squares creating a Wild Goose Chase pattern with solid white and a green print with tiny black dots. The Wild Goose Chase pattern of green triangles on white ground is pieced into the shape of an "X".
Border consists of 3 narrow strips of green and white, with green in the center. Binding is green.
Quilting is hand done in white: Feather wreaths have parallel diagonals in center. Most of quilt also has parallel diagonals; pieced blocks have triangles and small-scale grid on center square patch.
