With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Envelope annotated: “July 21/66 Just before going to Bedford.”

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston reporting that Mr. and Mrs. Shunk are “agreeable companions,” that he has heard nothing from her sister, and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin and daughters paid an agreeable visit; requesting the return of the pictures of Mrs. Ellis because he likes her and her likenesses; saying that the Misses Pleasontons will winter in Bethlehem, and that Blanche Nevin is ill; asserting that The Intellingencer will suffer without Mr. Cooper; wondering if the reported renewed friendship of Forney and Magraw will last; and offering sympathy with her fast approaching motherhood. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston rejoicing that “his namesake” has been baptized; noting that Mrs. Shunk did accompany her husband to Washington as Mary Black supposed; expressing happiness that “little Frank Scroder has recovered; conjecturing on the whereabouts of Miss Snyder, probably with her sister Mrs. Elsegood; elated that Henrietta has gone to Baltimore and might find a beau; repeating the gossip from Blanche Nevin that Harriet Lane had married Octavius Norris of Baltimore; thanking her for the cigars and cheese even though he did not like them, and the stockings, which he did, praying that she will “send me no more cheese”; and hoping his new-found relationship with Mrs. Lane will continue. With envelope addressed to Mrs. Harriet E. Johnston at 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland. 19 January 186[7].
