Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson commenting on the warm weather; the Napiers have been recalled to The Hague; all the young ladies are chasing Lord Lyons, a bachelor; the “gaity’ season has begun, with many dinners; Mr. Scharff’s brother and his bride (they were engaged three years!) are sightseeing; Mrs. Craig asked about her; asks about her “little hospital patients”’ thanks Miss Emily for her postscript to Mary’s last letter. Envelope with stamp removed and postmark addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Washington, D.C.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson worrying because he had not received a letter; neither have liked his letters lately; is provoked now because he is unable to visit her on the weekend because he must escort Mrs. Craig to a party planned by Count Sartiges; rants because he is not his own master; Miss Nina [Nord’s or Woods] married Mr. Boyce at 7:00 a.m. and are going to Havana; Miss Mary Bright’s engagement to Mr. Lawrason Riggs, a widower and brother of George Riggs of Riggs & Co., is a good one; heard Piccolomini sing, liked her personality but had an ordinary voice; and is looking forward to meeting her friends. Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not having written on the 1st but he was busy preparing and attending the Diplomatic and Public reception with all the military men in uniform; Napoleon looked especially sharp; at midnight the “great unwashed” were allowed in; after 2 a.m. Mrs. Craig and he visited about 12 people and he drank too much; Captain Ingraham was at Sartige’s party even though he can’t stand mourning, but the girls looked good in black; Miss Emily will visit the girl’s soon and Mary Hagner Nicholson’s mother will visit Washington soon; Dr. Dan had not been in Annapolis lately, leading James Buchanan Henry to surmise that all was well in the Nicholson family; has agreed to be Mr. Scharff’s groomsman and implores him to save his money; thinks her cousin Phil Vorhees is very accommodating and won’t “trespass “ on his goodness often; wishes to know what she did on New Year’s Day and thanks her for “returning” Mr. Scharff to him. Washington, D.C.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson commenting on the “small card” he sent ahead of this letter; expresses his utter happiness when thinking of her; Congress reconvened with the Senate moving into its new hall; the capital gets water for the first time via aqueduct; has a rare night off; goes to Judge Campbell’s party while Harriet, Mrs. Craig, and Miss Magraw go to a concert; waxes romantic about a photograph of her; will be in Mr. Scharff’s wedding; comments on her father and mother; and expects a long letter in return and hopes to see her Saturday. Envelope with postmark, stamp, and wax seal almost intact addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Washington, D.C.

Custodial History
The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009.
