Henry to Louisa Anderson detailing his delay in getting there; got Dody shoes, and tried to visit Cousin Lodi, Fanny Smith, and Fanny Randall; saw Miss Carver and saw her portrait painted by Indigiani; mentions cousins Alice and Anne, Mr. Crawford, and Mrs. Robinette and nieces; goes from Lancaster and Greensburg before returning to Annapolis; and sends best wishes to her parents. Envelope with stamp and postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan, care of Dr. Wm. C. Anderson, Stapleton. Oxford, Pa., Sunday night [15 June].

Henry to Louisa Anderson describing a stroll around the area of Lake George where he is staying, including widow Wing’s brownstone house they had admired, prices in the general store for Aunt Sidney’s amusement, details of Lake House, where he is lodged; Dody is with him and taking lessons in French and addition; catalogs a number of guests he knows; misses his wife and children; and comments of the greenness of Gull Island. Envelope addressed to Mr. J. Buchanan Henry, care Dr. Anderson, Stapleton, Richmond Co. Both heavily damaged by water with parts missing. Annapolis, Maryland, 2 July [after 1877].

Henry to Louisa Anderson agreeing with her that they should be separated less often but circumstances might decide otherwise; Mr. Parker hasn’t written about his business trip but should when he reaches his home in Guelph, Canada; if he feels well he will embark on a two- to three-week vacation to Lake George, visiting Uncle Edward on the way; he will bring some of his goods to Staten Island to be shipped to Australia; asks about Henny Thieriot; likes matrimony; wonders if Mrs. Muney or Mrs. Meade will be at Lake George; implores her to exert her authority on Dody in a way to gain his everlasting respect; went to a party on a cool piazza and a moonlight row on the bay; mentions Mrs. Southgate and Mrs. Magruder. Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson reporting that he has two ships can carry his letters to her; comments on his improved health, his walking, and the climate; likes the beauty of the islands but wishes to see some in the West Indies, such as Jamaica or Cuba; will have to write a draft for more money; wonders about the health of Esther [Purenett ]; looks forward to hers and Dody’s letters after a month of silence; wishes well to her father, [Allen] and Maud; and hopes to be home by 1 April at the latest. Envelope with address of Hamilton Hotel, Jno W. Dodge & Harnett, Bermuda, no stamp, and New York postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. Hamilton Hotel, Hamilton, Bermuda.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson lamenting his boredom, with the only excitement being the arrival of a steamer; his longing for a letter from her, even though the boat with the letter had trouble docking; replies to news from her letter including news of Dody, little Esther’s passing, her father Will Buchanan’s and Bib Christy’s grief; wants her to handle some financial affairs; wanted to go to other islands but the weather is too hot; made the acquaintance of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Smith of Watertown; hopes Mr. Gray is called to the church; Lollie Outerbridge reports that Mr. Cartwright is interim Pastor; mentions Mr. and Mrs. Butterfield and Terrie Roosevelt, the Murphys, Mr. Perrsett, Mr. Ball, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Magruder; the climate is warm and damp with little variation in temperature and many cloudy days; describes the island with its many plants, the results of a series of soundings showing that Bermuda is a coral island; is enamored by the variation of colors in the sea and of the scenery in general; hasn’t bathed in the harbor because of his rheumatism; sends greetings to her father, Aunt Sidney, Willie, Frank, his son, Miss Outerbridge; hopes to be home very soon. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Care of W. C. Anderson Stapleton, Staten Island, New York no stamp, New York postmark; Per Steamship Carrissa in upper left corner. Hamilton Hotel, Hamilton, Bermuda.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson mentioning his happiness that Dick delivered her letter and for the information Charlie obtained from Mrs. Townsend; Mrs. Magruder will send Dody by train from New York to Newark; hopes to be home soon; friendships hard to make in Newport because everyone lives in cottages; thinks Col. Thompson might be ill; had a great sail to Providence and might go to Block Island next; Mr. Schmidt sent Mr Winan of Baltimore to look at the yacht but seems uninterested in buying it; Cousin Will Buchanan is too ill to come; and only one beautiful woman in Newport. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J Buchanan Henry, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York, stamp and postmark. Newport, Rhode Island, Tuesday, 28 [July 1875].
