Henry to Louisa Anderson saying that he received her two last letters and glad that she and the child are well and flourishing; thinks he might have a touch of malaria and is taking medication; Mrs. Magruder is in bed with no broken bones; admonishes her get strong soon; Mr. and Mrs. Ray (newly weds) have taken possession of their house; will be in North Carolina for a while. Envelope with postmark and stamp removed addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, care Dr. W. C. Anderson, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. Annapolis, Maryland.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson expressing sorrow that she is sick and hopes she can produce enough milk for the their son; thinks he will look like her when a little older; upset that he has to leave for Currituck a day before the amateur theatrical in which “Mr. Randall & Mr. McIlvain & possibly Randy Hagner” will take part; Miss Susie wrote a nice letter and will with others spend a few days; frustrated that a nurse for the baby is so hard to find, his preferring an Annapolis woman to a Staten Island woman because the latter might get “house sick”; Miss Daly might be able to help; happy that she has heard from Cousin Annie, Harriet, and Alice; fears the economic conditions will get worse and the poor will suffer greatly; his business partner, Mr. Parker, is very gloomy about the future; ends on a melancholy note. Envelope with postmark and stamp addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, care Dr. W. C. Anderson, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. Annapolis, Maryland, Saturday [8 November 1874]. Date from postmark.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson lamenting his boredom, with the only excitement being the arrival of a steamer; his longing for a letter from her, even though the boat with the letter had trouble docking; replies to news from her letter including news of Dody, little Esther’s passing, her father Will Buchanan’s and Bib Christy’s grief; wants her to handle some financial affairs; wanted to go to other islands but the weather is too hot; made the acquaintance of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Smith of Watertown; hopes Mr. Gray is called to the church; Lollie Outerbridge reports that Mr. Cartwright is interim Pastor; mentions Mr. and Mrs. Butterfield and Terrie Roosevelt, the Murphys, Mr. Perrsett, Mr. Ball, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Magruder; the climate is warm and damp with little variation in temperature and many cloudy days; describes the island with its many plants, the results of a series of soundings showing that Bermuda is a coral island; is enamored by the variation of colors in the sea and of the scenery in general; hasn’t bathed in the harbor because of his rheumatism; sends greetings to her father, Aunt Sidney, Willie, Frank, his son, Miss Outerbridge; hopes to be home very soon. Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson wondering why his mail has not reached her; Will and he went to church in Bolton and spoke to Jack Thumb; thinks Mr. Thumb is a miserable person and would like to be his share in the house there; Will is a very good child even if he spilled blueberry pie on his pants; likes the hotel, the food (except the beef), the owner, and the guests, but not the mosquitoes; mentions Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler from Staten Island; dislikes the development around the lake; questions the slow delivery of mail; inquires about the household at home; recommends a “Bermuda colored man” to Miss Bleeker; inquires about Miss Taylor; and encloses a letter from Millie to Jamie. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Garden City, Long Island, New York with postmark but stamp missing. Lake George, NY.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson agreeing that she should stay with the children unless he really needs her; plans to come to her on Monday; recalls other similar “attacks”; resolves to exercise more; tried to find the Rhinds’ cottage; has no appetite; is sending pictures to Will and Jamie; is taking too much medicine and three types of baths; compares this institute to the one at Clifton; and wants a better bed when he comes home to her. Envelope with letterhead, postmark less two stamps addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Hillside House, Hague, Warren Co, New York. Saratoga Springs, NY.

Henry to William Anderson giving in great detail the status and appearances of Willy, Jamie, Rob, Reggie, Sydney, Frank, and Dody; hopes he is well and happy; has written to Belle; saw Frank, Lena and his nieces in Washington; and mentions that Reggie’s face is much like his mother’s. Letter from son Will to J. B. Henry recounting his conversation with the secretary of the cemetery company where James Buchanan Henry’s father and sister are buried informing him that no more interments will be made in the old cemetery and that the tombstones of his father and sister are “their condition is any worse than any of the others”; wonders if Reg has joined the Catholic Church; that Rob has returned to barracks after camp; and will send a picture of his camp a little later. Envelope with postmarks but stamp removed addressed to Mr. J. Buchanan Henry, Maryland Hotel, Annapolis, Maryland. Note in later hand: Willy [ __ ] father and sisters graves at Newburgh, Pa. Wall Shops, Wall, Greensburg, Pa.
