Letter from Henry E. Johnston to H. B. Swarr asking whether trustees are required to give bond in Pennsylvania and whether there is difficulty in changing a trustee, and requesting that, on the advice of Charles Macalester, future distributions of the estate to Mrs. Johnston be made in the original investments of her uncle without additional sale and reinvestment; and noting that Mr. Schell has just visited and Buchanan gives an “eloquent oration” daily after dinner. Letter from Harriet Lane to Mr. [Charles] Macalester in response to a letter received, enclosing a check from James Buchanan, and thanking him for the Claret. She goes on to say "The secession of medical students seems to have created very little stir in the great world generally, although the patriot Wise has made it the theme to one of his great productions. I am delighted to hear that Korty has moved his rooms to such a pleasant locality . . . For my own part, I rather approve of the Queen sending 'single men' as her representatives here . . . I expect to dine with the British Minister today-it will be the beginning of a series of ladies dinners at his hospitable mansion." Washington, D.C.
