Description
Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr saying that he has dealt with the affairs of Mrs. Dunham and asked her to name a person to handle a power of attorney; that Gaw Bacon & Co are holding all securities until the rate improves; that he prefers to visit Lancaster when Mr. Johnston is not there; that Jessie Magaw has written asking for $100 to help her parents; and that he is glad to learn that Mr. Howell is getting a solid block of marble for the monument and hopes to see Mr. Howell in Lancaster. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

Description
Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr promising a trip to Lancaster soon; mentioning that Mrs. Dunham has sent a receipt for the amount of her mortgage and proposing that Mrs. Dunham’s father, rather than G. W. Hecker whom she has recommended, is sufficient to enter satisfaction on her mortgage; discussing an enquiry from his son James about whether James Buchanan owned land in Forest County; and promising to send the check to Jessie Magaw. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

Swarr stating that Jessie Magaw is purchasing a house for which she urgently needs money due her from the estate; asking for the document for the heirs to sign regarding the $5000; hoping for Mr. Hiester’s comment on removal of the papers; and noting that although he had received Mr. Henry’s letter recently, it was not written after Mr. Henry had received his letter regarding the book. Description
Third and final audit of J. W. F. Swift of the distribution of the “balance in the hands of EYB and H. B. Swarr, executors of the estate of James Buchanan; after quoting the terms of the last will and testament of James Buchanan, the audit lists the expenses and distributing the remaining amount as follows: Harriet Lane Johnston $4643.76, John N. Lane $202.26, James B. Lane $202.26, Elliott E. Lane $202.26, John B. Weaver $151.69, EYB $782.45, James Buchanan Henry $613.57, Mary E. Dunham $306.77, James B. Weaver $76.69, Maria B. Weaver $76.69, and Jessie Magaw $76,69, Aggregate of contribution to biographical fund $1875.00, and aggregate if succession tax $108.39 for a grand total of $6314.69; and accounts for the bonds of the State of Tennessee; certified on 22 November 1873 by S. J. Kauffman, Deputy Clerk of Orphan’s Court.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
