Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson hoping she is well and recalling with joy their last walk along the bay as the “broad streak” of the moon appeared; the motor for his yacht Savana will arrive and Ben will install it so that he and Mary can go sailing; Bob Magraw is coming for the weekend; is looking forward to seeing her again; Miss Lane is christening the “new sloop of war” Lancaster at the request of Commander Stewart; Baron Sacker and the aide-de-camp to Grand Duke Constantine, Baron Bori, will be visiting Annapolis soon; and offers to send her a bouquet if she decides to go to a ball. Envelope with stamp removed and postmark addressed to Miss M. H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Washington, D.C.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson trying to get over a “large dinner”; looking forward to next week when he hopes to bring his yacht to Annapolis for a sail to Baltimore and back if he gets the weekend off and the weather is fine; the President granted a short reprieve to Barret, who should have been hanged today; wonders of Miss Emily’s sore throat is better; hopes she will be able to accompany Miss Ella to Washington so that he and she can see each other every night and would be her first visit to the capital since their engagement; Mr. Magraw came from Baltimore to have dinner with him and hopes Magraw and a ”sparkling young widow” will soon make a match; has received an invitation to General Henderson’s daughter’s wedding, the groom, Mr. du Pont, is a good friend of his.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson looking for her next letter; hopes she enjoyed her last party; Picolomini is singing, but he is not going to hear her; visited her sister Emily but she was out; the Ingrahams told him that Mary and Miss Margie were coming to town for a few days; list all the parties he hates to attend including Miss Saunders’ ball; General Cass’s dinner; the Douglas’s ball; Mrs. Riggs’ and Mrs. Merricks’ ball; and a reception at the President’s; still has a cold; infers she is the reason for his appreciating life more; Dr. Dan is flitting about on the social circuit; hopes Dr. Dan will find a “sweet little aunt” at Belvidere; the Scharffs are enjoying married life; Bob Magraw returned to Baltimore; the Cobbs and others on the Rev. Cutter’s expeditions dropped in on the Scharffs; and James Buchanan Henry will take to Scharffs to a reception and a large State dinner. Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing again for his comments about Mrs. Bright and has apologized to her and hopes she will spread no more rumors; regrets their long separation and hopes to see her soon; asks after the McKims; is thinking of having Lieutenant Saxton as his groomsman and must have Bob Magraw and General Ward at the wedding; Mr. Scharff is much happier after marriage than before and James Buchanan Henry looks forward to the same fate; mentions the Misses McKim, Miss Emily, and Dr. Raines, who has just been granted the ferry lines in Rio, which should result in a tidy fortune for him. Envelope with postmark and stamp addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. 142 Broadway, [New York], NY.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson exited that the time is near and much for both to do; he is completing negotiations for their house; he can hardly wait; will arrive in Annapolis on Friday so as to stay out of the way; very sorry that “the girls’ find fault with Mr. Magraw, but he is a good friend of James Buchanan Henry and will be at the wedding; hopes they will not slight him; thinks she will like the house; Mr. Cope will be the first groomsman and is pleased that Miss Emily will stand with Mr. Magraw; not too upset by Dr. Gleichen’s behavior; asks her to send invitations to Dr. and Mrs. Yates, John Yates, Esq, Charles Yates, and Mr. and Mrs. Dunham, all of Meadville, Crawford County, Pa., his cousins. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane sending her yarn via Mrs. Magraw, who is traveling with Robert to Philadelphia, inviting her to visit at Wheatland and mentioning that Colonel Hambright’s regiment was leaving for the West, not the South.
