Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson begging for longer letters to sustain him; hopes to visit Baltimore with Mr. Scharff, his wedding looming near; Miss Bright will be married in a small ceremony with 150 guests; teasing her by asking if she is flirting with Mr. Randolph and he will send Mr. Magraw to spy upon her; did not go to Com. Wilkes “tea fight”; mentions Miss Emily, the Ingrahams, and the parties of Mrs. Grims and Lady Napier; will get her a ticket to the Great Ball if she wishes; solicits her mother’s news in the next letter. Envelope with stamp and postmark addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care of John L. McKim, Esq. Baltimore. Washington, D.C.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson looking for her next letter; hopes she enjoyed her last party; Picolomini is singing, but he is not going to hear her; visited her sister Emily but she was out; the Ingrahams told him that Mary and Miss Margie were coming to town for a few days; list all the parties he hates to attend including Miss Saunders’ ball; General Cass’s dinner; the Douglas’s ball; Mrs. Riggs’ and Mrs. Merricks’ ball; and a reception at the President’s; still has a cold; infers she is the reason for his appreciating life more; Dr. Dan is flitting about on the social circuit; hopes Dr. Dan will find a “sweet little aunt” at Belvidere; the Scharffs are enjoying married life; Bob Magraw returned to Baltimore; the Cobbs and others on the Rev. Cutter’s expeditions dropped in on the Scharffs; and James Buchanan Henry will take to Scharffs to a reception and a large State dinner. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing again for his comments about Mrs. Bright and has apologized to her and hopes she will spread no more rumors; regrets their long separation and hopes to see her soon; asks after the McKims; is thinking of having Lieutenant Saxton as his groomsman and must have Bob Magraw and General Ward at the wedding; Mr. Scharff is much happier after marriage than before and James Buchanan Henry looks forward to the same fate; mentions the Misses McKim, Miss Emily, and Dr. Raines, who has just been granted the ferry lines in Rio, which should result in a tidy fortune for him. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson saying he delayed going to Captain Ingraham’s to await her letter, but it did not come; the delay in the mails resulting an missed an event at Miss McKim’s; he is happy that she is surrounded by friends; offering advice in getting over a “little affair” which will disappear if they love each other; Mr. Scharff was married at noon and James Buchanan Henry is very happy for his dear friend; will go to the farewell reception of the Napiers and later to a ball given by Mrs. Brown; sends regards to Miss Margie and apologizes for not receiving her invitation on time; and Dr. Dau.
